Honey Kiss, When Should It Be Picked
« on: July 24, 2024, 07:15:35 PM »
My mango wisdom is limited to my much loved Pickering.  I know her well and I know when the fruit is ripe for picking.
I planted a Honey Kiss a few years back and this year she produced about 3 dozen mangos.  In appearance they are quite different than the Pickering.  What I see so far is some yellow coloration on the shoulder area, with the rest of the fruit still green.  What should I look for as an indicator the fruit is ready to pick?

They look like they could go a bit longer. Try turning one 90 degrees on the pannicle gently and see if mango releases easily, then look at the sap coloration and amount that exudes from the mango.

What does that indicate?

I'm pretty sure you can allow your HK mangos to develop quite a bit of color before you pick them.  That's what I did when I had a tree previously.  Mine looked like this picture when I picked them:  https://www.tropicalacresfarms.com/product-page/honey-kiss  (And see the light spots?)

If it is clear then it is near optimal time to pick. Milky/whitish color and or large amount of sap coming out the mango needed more time to develop on the tree. It's not the exact same for each tree but you can use it as tool to help judge when to harvest.

They were placed in solitary confinement for their own protection.

On this video Walter says it can be picked when they show yellow.

This has worked well for me this year with honey kiss.

They are forgiving if you leave them on the tree, won't develop off flavors.
Not my personal experience, what I've heard from them that know.

They tend to not want to ever fall off either when mature.
