Suggest 2 More Mango Varieties For Me To Plant
« on: August 28, 2024, 12:22:31 PM »
I can squeeze in a couple more mango trees. I tasted an Ice Cream mango recently that was superb, but I haven't been keeping up and tasting many of the "newest" varieties.

Here's what I have in the ground:

  • Coconut Cream: love at first bite
  • M-4: I love coconut flavors
  • Pina Colada
  • Lemon Zest: mmmmmmm
  • Orange Sherbet
  • Buttercream: personal favorite that I don't hear discussed often
  • Pickering
  • Rosigold: got it for early season

What holes do I have in terms of flavor or season and how can I fill those?

Super Alphonso and Sunrise or some other Indian category mangos might round out your collection if you like it.

Here in Australia, Kensington Pride is the preferred variety, and is the most planted.

Rob to answer your question no KP is not a thing in Florida, Americans don't rate KP mostly if you read through this forum. There is a huge cultural element here and Aussies generally like our mangoes and the Thai SE asian ones Maha, NDM etc

Duncan or Phillipine for it's distinguishable flavor profile and productivity/hardiness.

Do American Mangoes taste different?
If so, how?

Yeh mate the old Florida varieties that we have in Australia such as keitt, kent, pearl, Palmer, brooks etc all have a chemical aftertaste which I believe is referred to as turpentine taste in America. Aussies don’t seem to like it. In saying that I have a Palmer tree because of the beautiful colour of the fruits and productivity of trees around here.

There are the new Zill varieties which some are in Australia however very few reports on them.

Some great suggestions. I need to make a point next season to get out and taste a lot more varieties.

I like Super Alphonso quite a bit, but a friend has a tree already. I had a few Sweet Tart mangoes and enjoyed those a lot, just not enough to put a tree in the ground. Honeykiss might make the cut as one of the two.

Some of the varieties I definitely want to taste: Sugarloaf, White Piri, Cac, Creme Brulee, Guava, and Sunrise. I guess I have to wait until after next season unless I want to risk planting without tasting first, which has always been a mistake in the past.

You probably haven't had a choice ST yet. It took me a few tries.

We probably have similar preferences if M4, lemon zest, and orange sherbet make the top of your list; they also make the top of mine. Guava is amazing. Had a bunch this year. I tried some kesars from an Asian supermarket I surprisingly really enjoyed. Cecilove and cotton candy are two more that are S tier in flavor. Cotton candy borders on being too sweet at times though. Mahachanok is another amazing one with commercial levels of production and disease resistance. Some of the other suggestions here I didn’t rate super highly (not a huge sample size either to be fair) such as CAC, Duncan, Angie and super Julie. They’re all good, but the ones I tried didn’t make the top tier imo. Dwarf Hawaiian was good enough to be a top tier mango in sweetness and texture but I prefer other flavor profiles a little more. Still very good nonetheless

I am completely willing to sample more before making a decision  ;D

Another option that caught my attention is Imam Pasand or Alampur Baneshan because of the flavor profile. It sounds similar in taste to Ice Cream, but with possibly better production and disease resistance? From my reading opinions seem split on the flavor. Another one I need to taste!

If you like Indian varieties, I suggest trying Jehangir. It’s a white fleshed mango. It was one of my favorites this year. I posted some pictures in the 2024 Mango thread.

Interesting choice of words.
The variety that we have here fulfilling the role for both is a splitter, so you may be better off planting White Pirie.

Is Kensington Pride (Bowen) a thing in Florida?

Is KP a commercially available fruit in OZ or is it more of tree that people plant in their yards? I have noticed the fruits are usually on the smaller side here. seems for production they aren’t the best type and a farmer would be shooting themselves in the foot for planting a large grove of them over a more productive variety.

I’m surprised more people in FL aren’t growing r2e2, while it’s a popular variety in HI. I know it’s not the best flavor but when I eat one, I’m amazed how much there is to eat. Late season, production is good, fruits are huge and they have a mild peach flavor which is enjoyable

Ben KP is the most commerical mango in Australia by a million miles. It performs well in the dry climates where it is grown, preforms poorly in wet areas like where i live.  There are many descendents of KP of which Honey Gold is one and is commercial here and is superior to KP in my view.  R2E2 are also a popular commercial variety however the ones at the supermarkets are picked way too early and not a good representation of them. When eaten tree ripened they are excellent in my view.

I came up with a new plan to create space for more mango trees. I will relocate the banana patch to an unused low spot in the yard, and plant as many mango trees as I can fit in the newly opened space. I will buy and maintain a stable of potted mango trees for future planting and grafting, because my plans always change and when they do I can't find exactly what I'm looking for. This way I will have the rare trees I need waiting in the bullpen to enter the game.

That meant a field trip to Tropical Acres. They emailed me a stock list of trees, and I knew I would have to get there immediately. South on I-95, down the hill past the mobile home park dodging cats and puddles, through the orchard on the winding gravel road to the deluxe mango showroom. Filled up the truck with:

  • White Piri
  • Imam Pasand
  • ST Maui
  • Sunrise
  • Sweet Tart
  • Cac
  • Cecilove
  • Sugarloaf
  • Honeykiss - for my neighbor
  • Dwarf Hawaiian - for my neighbor

Rosigold is growing poorly in a spot where I can fit a much larger tree so it's coming out and getting replaced with one of the big old boys like Cac or ST Maui. The rest of the trees can get bigger in their pots until next summer when I can taste all these varieties and make "final decisions" on planting and grafting.

I suggest you take a scion from each of your "reserves", graft them to trees in the the game.  In a couple of years you may be able to taste one or two fruits of some of your potential replacement corps, and possibly replace some trees by changing the canopy while retaining the mature root system.
