I'm getting started with DF. It looks like a good idea if DF do feed using the aerial roots. Is there real evidence for that?

I found aerial roots, on the shady side of the post, on my Halley's Comet going all the way down into the soil.

IMO Somebody needs to plant two identical Dragon Fruit plants, side-by-side, on identical post trellis, one with burlap, one without any covering to see if this is really that beneficial.

Seems like it can't hurt to feed theough those roots.  I have some posts setup with coco liner after seeing it on youtube.  Its much thicker than burlap and made for this type of application.  And it doesn't degrade as quickly.  I just wrap and staple with 9/16" T50 staple gun.

Your tree looks nice, has it not been getting fertilizer at all?  You should use a balanced fertilizer with micro nutrients.  Gro power avo citrus 8-6-8 is what I put on all my trees.  I put a fist full or so a few times a year.  They sell it at walter andersons.

I find it a little hard to believe that you can get commercially grown stone fruits that are equal to homegrown, tree-ripened fruit, due to the fact that they have to picked hard to withstand handling and shipping.  Maybe if the fruit went directly from a small, specialty grower to a fruit stand or a specialty store...

Farmers market has amazing peaches and other stone fruits.  Not exactly cheap at 2.50+ per pound but they are very good.  They had the best white peaches a few weeks ago.

Yes, you need to wait about 10+ more months.  I will start eating them next May and they ripen here maybe a bit earlier than most places in CA.  My reeds are about the size of tennis balls currently.  They should be more like a grapefruit or softball size and then they still need many months to get the oil up.  Last year my reeds were about 1lb 13oz in April

I just purchase a knight, pierce, and el bumpo.  Are the pierce and knight the same?

Knight and pierce are the same according to JF.  Did you get all three at the same time?  Where did you get them and what other types did theh have?  I have one more place for a cherimoya.  Just waiting to find the right one.

Haha, I always ask because its nice to meet new people that are close by and also curious about how far inland or how close to the ocean other members are.  I am further inland than you and growing some cherimoyas also.  They seem to be taking the inland heat ok.  That was a concern when planting but seems to be a non issue.

4809
Mikey, nice fruit.  What part of town do you live in?

4810
They have knight cherimoya and bumpos at walter andersons in poway.  The trees are hidden behind the bananas.  They are more expensive there but they have some top grafted trees.  You can probably find some up in vista also maybe atkins or clausons.

Anyone using coco coir sheets on their DF supports?  Saw a guy on youtube showing his off.  Seems better than burlap.  Costs more...  That guy may be a member here.  Forgot his youtube handle, hes an older guy who wheres tie dye and looks like hes in Florida probably.

Will wait a week or 2 to photo the in ground seeds and transplants.  The transplanted ones are about to flush.  Seeds are still real tiny.  They may get cooked in the sun, not really sure yet.

I have another dozen seeds in pots that I may experiment with indoors under a 200W cree cob grow light.

Using some fertilizer on the trees seems to have gotten them going.  Here are my florida trees.  They seem to be doing ok.  Slow growing but healthy.

spaugh, the biggest problem with grafting in Summer at you area is trying to keep scion's from frying in you heat!! You could cover graft's with white paper bag's with slits at top of bag so it doesn't get to hot but that would be your call. the other is having the right scion condition and growth forcing on rootstock! I've tried summer graft's but have found that percentage of takes goes down for me at any other time than around Jan-March. But that is for me in my cooler coastal area! Give it a try all you will lose is scion wood and maybe a branch. Good luck ;)

Thanks yeah its super hot here now.  I was partly asking in case anyone wanted scions.  I need to prune the bottom of my trees to get them off the ground and allow the sprinklers to cover a good area.  Figured I would offer wood if anyone wanted it.  And have been toying with the idea of doing a couple frankencado trees like Marks just for fun.

I am thinking about putting some mexicola branches on a bacon tree.  They seem to have very similar growth habits.  I think it would be nice to look at a big tree covered in little black fruit along with big green fruits.

Mark, hers a nother shot of sir prizes on my tree.  They are a hass type so a little bumpy seems normal.  They have a little ridge on the side that goes away as they swell up.  They grow really fast and mature in just 7 or 8 months.  Thats a lot faster than some of the others.  I am pretty unimpressed with the strength and shape of the tree though. Hopefully that improves with age.

Thanks for the info!  I was wondering how long they took from blossom to harvest.  And yes right now the ridge if VERY pronounced.  It's like the stem is hanging on the side of the fruit at top.

The bumps and the ridge will start to disappear when they get closer to full size.

If the ridges are still showing then you will need to wait until January or February to test your fruits would be my guess.  Your greenhouse is probably more comparable to someone on the coast or further north in CA.  I read a good article somewhere saying how the cooler coastal and northern/central CA locations take longer for avocados to mature and they also can hang a lot longer on the tree.

My guava trees have lots of these praying mantis type bugs that look like guava leaves.  No idea what they are or what they eat.

Does anyone know if mid summer is acceptable time to do some grafting or is it too hot?

Hi Frank, amazing fruit!  Is it normal for Sir Prize to be bumpy like this?  Mine doesn't look like Spaugh's.  BTW, you're right SP is a branch breaker.

Hi Mark,
I just took  a photo of my SP fruit today for your comparison:

Looks like the fruit is more like Spaugh's, my tree had Durling Nursery's tag from
Fallbrook, CA; wonder if his was also from this same nursery...

My Sir Prize was from Clausons.  Not sure where they got it from.

4821
Maybe let amazon know they have a mistake.  The same sellers on ebay are in CA and ship to CA.

4822
Thats sounds really spendy.  Is that the place in Santa Cruz?

I'm bummed reading this about diamond.  I was sold a diamond tree not knowing it was a crap mango.  And it appears to be the best growing tree I've got.

I have the following trees from Florida

Diamond
Sweet Tart
20222 Winters
Edward
Ugly Betty
