Ideas of what mango variety to replace my bbs infected Venus?!
« on: January 09, 2023, 11:53:02 PM »
After my second failed year of trying to yield uninfected venus mangos, I've decided I'm going to unfortunately replace the tree. I would graft a different variety but I do not know how. Anyways, and ideas on a late season variety that is also disease resistant? Also, can't be a giant, my tree is currently 12 foot tall and I plan to replace it with a variety I can maintain at that size. Thank you!

My Carla tree hasn't been super vigorous, but it's also growing in So-Cal.

There are good videos online to show you all about grafting, Truly Tropical has a few.

Neelam is disease resistant, late fruiting, and compact tree

But different taste profile then Venus

Little Gem and Cotton Candy are other choices but Cotton Candy may have the
same issues as your venus?

Little Gem is a very good mango. Ate lots of them last year, and they were mid to late season. A winner.

I concur with this.

If you want the Indochinese flavor around the same season you might be able to get some from later Zinc crops or even Sweet Tart (though they both are not what i would consider low vigor)

It doesn't seem too vigorous so far (one year).  I like the way it's stayed compact, due to its Julie genetics?

Thank you Alex and John. I really like this mango, and think it is a must have, at least in my yard. Chopping and planting.

This is my one-year-old Little Gem tree. In contrast, the year-old seedling Orange Sherbet tree was 3 times as big before I cut it back prior to relocating it.
