my banana plant survived winter, what now?
« on: May 06, 2023, 06:16:17 PM »
This should put out a flower pretty soon, right?  And do I cut off all the pups except one?

It is in a 20gal container, and is about 10ft tall

When you say 10' do you mean just the red height or are l you including the white part too?

I believe for any cultivar, the reported fruiting height is only the red one, not the extra height of the vertical emerging leaves.

Yes, it’s about to flower.
If you want only 1 replacement plant then keep 1 pup.
Keep the lowest pup.

Thanks.  I was talking about red+white... red is only ~5-6ft.  Good to know

And yes I only want one replacement, this is just for fun.  Growing cavendish bananas in pennsylvania is not a good return on investment!

I would think some support might be a good idea. When it develops a rack of bananas, it will become unbalanced. In my experience, bananas are very prone to falling over (usually in the wet season in my case when the soil is soft).

Finally a flower emerges.  Yes, I think I will need to prop it up as it has fallen over in the wind already once or twice

I grew a dwarf cavendish many years ago in my g.h. until it took over, made the mistake of putting in ground. Nice flower Brian, wishing you many hands of ripe fruit. ;)

I think you may find homegrown bananas worth it brian, many people say that it is one of their favorite fruits when picked ripe off the rack

A simple mop handle with a y fashioned at the top could suffice as a prop
