Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Are black and white sapote worth it
« on: February 20, 2024, 12:54:56 AM »
My Suebelle white sapote produces fruit that makes me think of lemon custard.  It's the only variety I've tasted.  I do quite like it.

Black sapote is a Winter crop, and a prolific bearer.  Lots of fruit means lots of calories, in case SHTF.

Potting mix with sand makes it nice & loamy.  Only drawback being sand is quite heavy

I'd soak cherimoya seeds in water until they sank, before planting out

$5 each
USPS Priority Small Flat Rate shipping

I will be pruning my chaya tree during it's winter dormancy, and will have plenty of cuttings available.

I have a vigorous, spineless variety, with large leaves.  Tree is very hardy

Looks like the left branch is a graft union.  Check to see if there's a V-indentation.  You can also post up close pics

Yup. Add more acid

It'll flower within a year from sprouting in-ground.  They are vigorous growers

I've been growing Sunrise (aka Strawberry) Papaya for around a decade.  It's a vigorous grower, and bred to be mainly hermaphrodite.  No musk smell at all, unlike Maradol Papaya.  Very sweet

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Compost Fertilizer?
« on: December 05, 2023, 04:08:25 PM »
I have compost piles & a DIY worm compost bin.  Additions which I grow/acquired-

moringa, banana leaves/pseudostem, longevity spinach, general tree leaves, fruit scraps, kombucha scobies, insect frass I acquired for free from rainbowmealworms.net in Compton, CA

For purchased food, I add-

coffee grounds, organic tea bags

The only outside input I buy for my plants is kelp meal.

I feel this provides just about everything

Have a flower bud coming out right now.  Dwarf Namwah takes SoCal Winters just fine.  Thick trunk usually doesn't require staking.  Great flavor!

Here's pics of old Namwah bunches

I originally purchase Sunrise & Waimanalo seeds from the University of Hawaii at Manoa Seed Bank.  They are mainly hermaphrodite.  Sunrise, aka strawberry papaya, is very sweet with no musk smell.  I highly recommend it

Seedlings do fine in full sun & during the Winter where I am.  Fruiting, too.  They are hardy plants

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is Keit mango this big normally?

California Keitt mangoes are grown commercially in the Coachella Valley.  Keitt are great late season mangoes, but prone to disease

For CA-

Pickering (flavor & reliable production)
Cac
Venus/Sweet Tart (related cultivars)
M4/Sugarloaf (related cultivars)
Angie

I've read Val-Carrie does well, too

According to this website, the fruit has a lot of seeds & is unpalatable.  So, it seems it's ornamental

Violette de Bourdeaux, Ronde de Bourdeaux, Lattarulla

I would believe so, due to the cyanogenic glycosides.  Chopping the leaves up prior to boiling will help dispel the cyanide faster, too.
