Wow, that fruit will be 1/4 of the size of the tree if it holds. I decided to finally try grafting pickering the other day. Hopefully it take.
You can never had too much mango varieties  ;D

So it seems like everyone from Caribbean comes to Florida and a "Julie" mango seed happens to be in their pocket.  ;) (Same thing with other nationalities but replace Julie with that nations favorite mango)
As we all know a Julie mango seedling is not a Julie. Even in the Caribbean itself people plant Julie seedlings claiming they are Julies.
If i had to guess between South Florida and the Caribbean there is probably around 100,000 unique "Julie"s.

How does one go about deciding which Julie is THE Julie?
I guess this is a mango history question. But i'm even more interested in the process of determining which tree's scion to bring back, propagated and call Julie.

Feel free to post histories of other mangos and their selection process here.

Thank you for posting this, Mr. Clean!  I've got a few spots in my yard left.

You can always make more room.   :)

Ain't that the truth.
I had "one more spot" last year...now i have 3 more even after planting 5 trees this week.

unfortunately i only have a seashore mangosteen, i dont think they are graft compatible.  :'(

Thanks for sharing.
I think all these are considered condo/dwarfish mango and there is a whole lot of variance between them.
The pikering is a whole lot smaller than the rest, neelam comes in a distant second.

So this thread went sideways pretty fast ;D.
I finally got a Day avocado, thanks for the recommendation.

Between Day, Oro Negro and the freebies from friends I think I should be okay for Avocados throughout the year.

A forum member uploaded a video of Dr. Ledesma's talk on mangos recently.
IIRC she was saying that heavy pruning (more than a 3rd of the tree) should be done in spring. Gives the tree some time to rebound.

O man that's too bad from what I understand annona grafting is highly dependent on timing. Seems like March is when all the magic happens.
Unfortunately the sugar apples I have are not big enough to get scions from and I'm probably not allowed to send scions to California.
You can also check with Adam "flyingfoxfruits". Hes been pretty busy though so it might take a little while to hear back.

Forum member "jf" located in California has a thread in the buy sell section with a bunch of different annona scions. Probably your best bet.

Flagging tape as in the type of tape to mark the trees for purchase at a nursery?

Yup I think it's the same kind.
I Find it to be a good multipurpose tape are the yard, tying up trees, marking them, easy enough to write on. I use it in conjunction with parafilm. If you double it up or fold it in half it's can withstand a good bit of tension.
This is mainly for the older wood that's need more force to ensure good contact. I wrap the graft (only) directly with the flagging tape and wrap the scions and graft with parafilm to keep it water tight.

Ideally I want to get good enough where I don't need it. But I guess whatever works for now.

Also a tip I learned at the recent grafting class at rfvcb (taught by Sal) is to fold the parafilm M in half twice and you get pretty good tension that way too.

There are plenty of more experienced grafters on the forum, they'll have better insight than me. Just thought I'd share what works for me.

Newbie at grafting here too so I feel your pain. I've been using flagging tape for this.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Maintaining compact mangoes
« on: April 01, 2016, 03:33:32 PM »
So, 24' is the recommended distance for compact mango trees.

This info. is quite useful for a relative with quite a small yard. I'm helping out with the mango variety selection and the quantity; a configuration that stretches the mango season out the most during the year. The varieties that I'm including in this unfinished For Sure Must Have List are: 'Keitt,' 'Miracle, 'LZ...'

Thanks for this useful and informative Thread on compact mango tree varieties.

P.S.   We're also trying to compact-squeeze-in 'Mauritius' lychee, and a few avocado tree varieties, including 'Lula' (of course), to stretch out as much as possible the avocado season during the year.

I planted one at my Fathers house around 5 years ago its around 12ft now, last year was the first year it bloomed and set fruit. This year only two blooms so far.
Has anyone else experienced a miracle with choc anon yet?

In short i wouldn't recommend it if planting it to expend the season.

What type. Rosigold?

1993
After getting caught up in the whole air pruning stuff I bought few 1 gallon root pouches (fabric). With the eventual thought of going strictly fabric.
Things i don't like; you have to elevate the pot (didn't want to buy more crap), expensive, concerns about longevity (UV damage), and I wonder how much I damage the root when transplanting.

Since i have 20 of instead of throwing them away I just stick the bigger seeds inside there so the main tap root gets air pruned. You could do this with regular pot but since i have some fabric ones might as well put them to use.

If i want to keep something permanently in a pot then i'll probably get a more heavy duty fabric pot though. I'm too lazy to root prune every few years.

Other than those i'll sticking with nursery pots

That's cool Dom I'm thinking about striping mines too, but then again that's a lot of work on 18-20 feet tall trees.
carlos

Same thing happening with my reticulatas, I guess i'll go with Franks advice too

I thought it was a cherimoya because the leaves look pretty big and has that fuzzy look.
Didn't realize Atemoyas have a point leave.
Learned something new, thanks Dom.

Any luck with the Dream grafts?

Also what to do with mixed vegetative/blossom spikes that have dropped all bb sized fruit...should they be left as is and be allowed to become branches  (would they? ) , or should they be cut off and if so when?

Thats a good question,
I usually cut it off as if i was tipping the branch before.

Not sure if this is the best thing to do.

Carlos,

Here's a link to a thread i started a month or so ago. It has pictures of some of the reticulatas i ate this year.

I'm actually going to the post office right now to send out some scions and seeds. Hopefully it doesnt take too long

So i'm thinking blooming season (in my yard at least) is over.
Seems like everything is switching to leaves now.

NDM only has around 6 spikes (1 new growth is just leaves)
Lancetilla has 2 spike (no new growth yet)
VP has 1 spike (new growth on top is leaves)
Rosigold has around 10 spikes (new growth is leaves)
Neelam has many spikes thats weighing down branches (rest of the terminals are leaves now)

Disappointed in this years blooms.

Is it safe to trim some of these trees now? Open up the canopy and whatnot.

The fruit looks great. I have a few purples and yellow A. reticulatas this year. No reds yet though. Let me know when seeds and/or fruit are available.
BTW whats the history behind this variety?

Great initiative to get more people contributing Adam.

Maybe we can do some more contest like fruit hunting in their own locality. Finding more delicious annona specimens.  ;D

Last year i had a few different seedling avocados that were great and big, this year i'm going to be fact checking these growers and see the tree. I'll post to that thread when i find out some more info
