Fig Trees Recommended to grow in Fresno County cal ???
« on: September 03, 2022, 10:04:39 PM »
I'm looking for names of best fig trees to grow in Fresno area, I'm trying to have a long growing season early to late harvest and what's some of better trees for large size of fruit and taste both ??, I already have Tiger, Black Mission, Celestial. Any tips on ideal ways to propagate would be very helpful also.

Former fig paradise.  The fig garden area has been supplanted by homes and other development!

I was visiting some relatives out in Sanger last month, Academy and Shaw/Ashland,  and it's no longer the "boonies" allright. Probably better than west Fresno at least. Just too freaking hot and foggy cold out there for me.

Perhaps calimyrna figs if the wasps are still around?

You need to talk to member Brian M on ourfigs. He has a website Profig: https://profigusa.com/shop/

He's on east Garland ave in Fresno. You won't find another person on earth that can help you more with figs for Fresno than Brian.

I used to live in Piedra but that was before I knew about figs. If I were still there I'd pick Brian's brain.

I have Burgan Unknown discovered by Brian M and considered one of the best when pollinated.

I would check out Fruitnut's listings on Figbid.  He sells all the best top-tier figs which should do well in your location and like suggested above Ourfigs is a great resource to learn more about the varieties.

Figaholics has a huge scion sale in the winter if you do your research and get your wishlist ready.

Thoses are great links and thanks to all that sent suggestions to compliment what I already have, I forget to mention also in addition to having a extended season and large fruit size, I also prefer a very large and fast growing tree, I have plenty of extra room to plant,I also what to sell figs at farmers market and fruit stands so varieties ideal for fresh market is great also.

I bought a tissue culture plug of Black Madeira from Brian M.
End up with 7 plants in a few months.

I don't even know yet if the fig wasp is in my area, if it's not then looks like I will be limited on certain kinds of figs to grow.

If there are feral figs nearby then you'll have the wasp. There were massive groves of figs along all the waterways when I was there.

If you want to sell fruits, choose varieties that has tougher skin.
