Also looking for sharwil if anyone has access to that one as well.

I won't be able to go this year, but this is a GREAT event, especially for those of you lurkers and noobs that haven't gotten to try more than the usual varieties.  Last year most people walked away with canvas grocery bags full of mangoes--they even had mangifera relatives like M. lalijwa, M. casturi, etc.

The email I got says Chris Rollins will be hosting.  Call F&S park to reserve your spot early--no $ required, just get on the list.  After actually tasting so many varieties last year, I ended up ripping out/trading 6 or 7 varieties after tasting.  Now, a year later, the yard is mostly geared to my family's tastes.   If you love mangoes, are new to growing mangoes, or haven't tasted more than Haden or Keitt, this is the event for you--no joke!

Researching the varieties available from USDA and had a few questions:

1.  I am assuming lower latex ratings are more desirable, but then I had a thought that higher latex may be beneficial for surviving cool temps here in south FL.  thoughts?

2.  Most of the varieties say they have spines.  Does the tree have spines (a la salak), or just the fruit?

PM me if you are interested in growing any of the USDA varieties.

Recipes / Intense, tropical smoothie creation (mango, mora, tamarind)
« on: April 27, 2015, 01:07:58 PM »
Made a smoothie yesterday with frozen fruit pulp from the store (as my trees are not yet producing).  Anyway, I threw together a smoothie with whatever we had left, and it came out incredible!!

Recipe (makes an entire blender):

1.5 packs frozen mango pulp
Homegrown Red Lady papaya (about the amount of pulp that would fit in one's palm)
1/2 pack of mora (Andean blackberry) frozen pulp
1/3 pack tamarind
Sugar to taste--( I used 2-3 T for the entire recipe)
12-16 oz coconut water (homegrown  8))

Blend to perfection!  It was like an intense tropical candy, like would be in the tropical flavored starburst or lifesavers.  A perfect sweet sour balance, with sweet barely winning out!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Miracle Fruit
« on: April 20, 2015, 04:40:06 AM »
sorry for triple post, but I'm all excited...

i have a bunch of miracle fruit that's probably going to waste....

but guess what...

I'm going to make a dang ol' miracle fruit leather...even if it takes an hour to clean the pulp off the seeds! (I've done it before, and got about 1 cup of pulp in approx 30 min....i used a very high quality vegetable peeler)

does it still have the same taste-altering aspect when dried as well? Have you tried it with a sour fruit such as miracle fruit/araza combo?

Anyone in Florida growing this?

According to Morton's FOWC, it was growing well in homestead in the 1940s, but disappeared.

I know they have a  living tunnel (probably not the best word since it isn't underground, but I mean a series of fruiting arches) at Fairchild Gardens, just outside the Whitman Pavilion.  I believe they used wax jambu, or some Syzygium species.

Any ideas for a plant that would grow/fruit in half sun/shade and be able to be "molded" to form an arch?

I know rose apple would work, but wondering what else?

PS:  sorry if this is worded in a confusing way--my brain is still waking up from the weekend I guess. :o

I was wondering if there is a distinct difference in taste between these 2, as I have had them at different times but thought they tasted/looked similar.  Is there a difference in productivity?

Last fall, at the Jackfruit Festival at Fairchild Garden, I tasted several good jackfruit varieties.  Toward the end of the day, a jackfruit was on the sampling table, labeled:  Bosworth.  Ed Castlebury, a friend of Chris Rollins, brought the Bosworth from his grove.  It is a softer jack (which I don't usually like), but the flavor was so powerful!  It was like a juicy fruit rush to the head!!

Anyone know anything about this variety?

or know Ed Castlebury?

I have a few trees like cambuca that will take a long time to fruit.  I know grafted trees (which I mostly have) can produce in 3 years or so give or take for each species.  What tropical fruits can be fruited from seed (or corm, etc) in 3 years or less.

Brandon's Red Jaboticaba and White Jade pineapple make the list.

Bananas
Papaya
Some Jackfruit seedlings
Dragonfruit?
Grapes
Passionfruit

what else?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / lakoocha: should it stay or should it go?
« on: April 05, 2015, 08:37:06 AM »
I have 2 lakoocha seedlings that are roughly 4-5 ft tall.  My space is limited, so I am wondering:

1.  Is lakoocha tasty enough (worthy enough) to plan a spot for?

2.  How long does it take to fruit from seed?

3.  Would I be better off with kwai muk?

Thanks!

I have no room for this variety in my yard so trying to see if anyone wants it for $25.  The tree was recently pugged (bought as 3g 2 summers ago).  It would be easy to ship if someone outside of FL is interested.  It's presently only 6-8 inches tall.

$25 plus shipping

Harvest Moon is a new zill's creation with large, evenly-ripening fruit.  PM me if interested.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / will metal poles for espalier induce lightning?
« on: February 11, 2015, 09:55:24 AM »
So, I plan on putting up some metal fence posts to run wires for espaliering fruit.  I have done this with wood posts, but would like something more durable so I don't have to replace them every 5-10 years.  However, we get lots of lightning here in Florida, and I was wondering if this poses a threat to my house or the fruit trees.  I am afraid of getting them erected and coming out to fried fruit trees, or to causing a fire.  I am fairly ignorant when it comes to this type of "science" so any help would be appreciated.

Anybody?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passionfruit not flowering. What to do?
« on: February 08, 2015, 06:44:50 PM »
I have a purple possum passionfruit growing on a fence in my front yard.  It gets lots of sun, and is thriving in terms of growth/vigor.  It has even climbed into my neighbor's ficus tree and growing like crazy.  Leaves are nice and green, and the stem is 3 inches in diameter near where it was planted.  It is probably about 16 months old, maybe more.  Last year, I got about 5-6 fruits from it (that were excellent), but it hasn't even flowered this year.

I haven't fertilized it, so it's not a case of too much nitrogen.  Looking for suggestions, as I would love to eat from this beautiful vine.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Must-have eugenias (based on flavor)
« on: February 06, 2015, 10:36:49 AM »
I have limited space, but am interested in eugenias, and even have several.   I know some of you collect eugenias for fun, but I want to gear this toward eugenias that are worthy of being grown, based on their flavor and production.

Thus far, I have:

grumichama (brasiliensis)
rainforest plum (candolleana)
Cherry of rio grande (involucrata)
pitomba (luschnatiana)
Australian beach cherry/cedar bay cherry (reinwardtiana)
pitangatuba (selloi/neontida)
Dwarf grumixama (itaguahiensis)

Also interested in:
Araza (stipitata)
uvalha (pyriformis)
surinam cherry (uniflora) black variety
E. pitanga
E. florida
E. victoriana

others?

Which ones are high-quality in terms of taste?
Not interested in types that cannot handle high ph soils of south florida.

Any info would be quite helpful.

What are your favorites?

So far, I thought grumichama and pitomba were quite good, but haven't tried many of them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What is your favorite durio species?
« on: January 09, 2015, 01:25:10 PM »
http://www.yearofthedurian.com/2013/04/a-complete-list-of-durian-species.html#.VLAcBdLF-Sp

With all the durian posts the past few months, I started pre-researching some of the durio species.  The article details many of the species of durio.  Just wondering, for those who have tasted many durians, what is your favorite?

I usually plant these in the Spring, but I forgot this past year.  I have some of the dried tea packets, but would like to have the fresh pods.  PM me if you know anyone growing them that has some to spare.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / santol at Fairchild Gardens
« on: December 08, 2014, 09:36:02 AM »
https://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/morton/santol.html

Was just reading about santol in Morton's "book" and saw that the specimen at Fairchild has been quite productive.  I don't ever remember hearing about this tree.  Is it in The Whitman pavilion or somewhere else?
