Citrus General Discussion / Citrus in Japan
« on: January 10, 2023, 04:32:56 PM »
For those who are interested, I was to be able to visit Japan last December. During the trip I was lucky to find many different Japanese citrus.

Yuzu harvest season had just ended. You could find yuzu at any major grocery store, and often Kabosu and Sudachi as well.

Premium yuzu at 3€ each

Kabosu grown in Tokyo. The owner, an old coffee lady, insisted that the flowers attract many swallowtail butterflies each year.

In Tokyo I found many antenna shops. These shops represent a single prefecture. A great spot to find many different citrus-related products and fresh fruits including Jabara citrus from Wakayama, Yuzu from Koichi, Kabosu from Oita, Shikuwasa from Okinawa and Sudachi, Yukou and Awa Suzuka from Tokushima. Awa Suzuka is apparently a hybrid between Sudachi and Yuzu. It was recently released and Tokushima is currently trying to promote the citrus. I found some more information here: https://4citrus.com/english/ . It was quite an impressive fruit.

Dekopons were promoted a lot! Very high quality and tasty fruit, but often priced at at least 6€ per fruit, often double of that. I did look like there were different varieties of dekopons, since the I saw different sizes and colorations of the fruit. But this could be an other class of dekopon.

I visited the Koichi prefecture to look for some Yuzu farms. I mostly saw Citrus being grown in plastic tunnels. In the mountain region of Kochi, Yuzu was instead mostly grown unprotected. It was pretty impressive to see the scale on which yuzu was grown. Almost all of the yuzu I found was the very seedy kind. In fancier restaurants, I was sometimes met with seedless yuzu and sudachi. Unfortunately I have not found any seedless varieties in Europe. In Japan, it was simply available on Amazon.

Citrus General Discussion / Citrus germination
« on: December 30, 2022, 02:40:20 AM »
Does anyone happen to have a protocol for properly germinating citrus seeds? I have inconsistent results. Usually the main problem is getting fungus on the seeds after peeling the seed coats. I have previously tried sterilization with bleach and/or disinfection in 40°C but that was not able to get rid of the fungus completely (or the growing substrate was not clean). Any help would be appreciated!

Citrus General Discussion / Variegated seedlings

Hi, I am germinating some yuzu seedlings, and some of them appear to be variegated. Does anyone have experience with this trait? Does it persist in the seedlings?

Citrus General Discussion / Switching from juvenile to adult
« on: October 06, 2022, 04:26:49 PM »
Hi,

I have some trees (yuzu) that are reaching almost 2 meters. When could I expect them to become mature? Are there any signs that I can look for when they mature?
The main shoot appears exactly like the new growth I would expect from a grafted yuzu.

Hi,

One of my yuzu seedlings consistently makes four leaflets. Has anyone seen this before? Is it common?
Could it be a hybrid?

Citrus General Discussion / Citrus juvenility and internode count
« on: June 07, 2022, 02:51:34 PM »
Hi!

I am quite interested in citrus juvenility. There are some studies that suggest after x amount of plant internodes, the seedling will become adult. One study observed flowering earliest at around the 50th internode up until 120ish internodes. In my opinion, genetics clearly play a role, especially considering precociousity.

Does any one of you have experience with the number of internodes required for flowering? I am especially interested in yuzu, and when to expect flowering in my seedlings  ;D

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Yuzu (EU)
« on: June 20, 2019, 04:33:58 AM »
Last year I got my hands on some Yuzu fruit imported from Japan. I sow the seeds and now I have way too many seedlings. I have many available, I would love to trade for some other citrus seedlings or budwood. I would also be willing to ship them out for free as long as you cover the shipping fees.

Citrus General Discussion / How to promote new growth on Scion?
« on: May 16, 2019, 03:30:11 AM »
Earlier this year I bought some interesting Citrus varieties. They have started to grow new branches, but I've noticed that 4 out of 5 plants all started new growth on the rootstock part of the plant. Is there any way to promote growth on the scion (other than just removing the new growth on the rootstock part)?
The rootstock is P. trifoliata and the scion is C. sphaerocarpa (kabosu)

I have recently acquired some great Poncirus Trifoliate plants that I want to use as rootstock to practise some grafting. I am looking for some budwood, since my own plants are not yet of size. I mainly collect Japanese citrus varieties but I open for anything.

Some species that I already have:
- Kabosu
- Yuzu
- Citrus obovoidea
- Citrus flaviculpus
- Citrus kejari

Some species that I am mainly looking for (but once again, open for anything)
- Yuzu (mine are seedlings)
- Sudachi
- Yuko

Citrus General Discussion / Need help with polyembryonic yuzu seedlings
« on: January 24, 2019, 08:03:23 AM »
Hi there,

In december I was able to get my hands on some yuzu fruits imported from Japan. I am a big fan of Japanese citrus varieties so I took this oppertunity to collect the seeds. I planted the seeds in normal potting soil and surprisingly, many germinated! I have some questions about these seedlings:

1. Some sources say that yuzu seedlings are not polyembryonic and therefore my seedlings could be some other varity. I also saw some other sources say that yuzu could be polyembryonic and therefore it should not be a problem. What can I expect from these seedlings? For now, I have germinated up to four plants from one seed.

2. I know that citrus seedlings are not true to their parents, however to what extent are they not true to their parents? My thoughts are that if I have many seedlings, there should be some that could be closely related to the parent trees

3. Can I seperate the seedlings from each other (using root inducing growth hormones)?

4. Not relevant to the topic, but does anyone know where I can find other Japanese citrus varities (yuko, sudachi, kabosu etc.) in Europe?

Any help is appreciated!
