NEW FINDING: AMAY!
« on: December 19, 2022, 01:01:37 PM »

We discovered Amay (Agonandra excelsa) at the Misiones forest! This is a new finding. You can reserve this very rare species now, just mail me at marcospcmusica gmail.com or PM me, thanks

The Amay is found in semi-deciduous forests, primarily in Minas Gerais to Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, but we found it on Argentina too.
The fruit is spherical, measures 2 to 3 cm in diameter, and tastes like a lime orange with kiwi.
The fruit is very versatile and can be consumed fresh, or used in juices, jams, compotes and sweets.
The fruit is harvested when it is ripe but still firm, and is sensitive to handling so it should be handled carefully to avoid damage.
The fruit is abundant from December to January, and is eaten by various forest mammals such as monkeys, opossums, agoutis and squirrels.
The root of the tree is used to make beer.

About cultivation:

The plant has a slow growth and needs shading for the first 3 years of life if grown in full sun.
It prefers red soils with good humidity and should be planted at the head of slopes where there is no flooding.
It is resistant to frost up to -2 degrees and can be planted at any altitude. Once established, it also resists drought well.
Germination occurs in 30 to 40 days and the seedlings reach 25 cm in 8 months after germination. The plant begins to bear fruit 7 to 9 years after planting.
The recommended spacing is 6 x 6 or 5 x 6 m. The pits should be 50 cm in height, depth and width, and it is necessary to add 1 bucket of well-cured organic compost and 1 kg of lime. Irrigation is necessary in the first year.
