Chamba is a little-known fruit tree native to the Amazon region of Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Bolivia. The fruit of the champa tree has a unique, caramel-like flavor and an exquisite scent. It grows in temperatures between 22 and 30°C, with annual rainfall exceeding 1,500mm, and requires loamy to clay soils. The tree starts producing fruit around five years of age, and the maximum production occurs in September (February for Junin, Argentina). The fruit is traditionally harvested from the ground when it is close to maturity and can be harvested for up to 15 days, yielding up to 75kg per day.

Growing this tropical fruit tree is fairly easy once it gets past the early stages: keep it moist, use a slightly acidic substrate with a good amount of organic matter, water with chlorine-free water, and keep it a bit out of the sun when too young. It resists -2ºC, it is not recommended to plant it in places with strong frosts. The seeds are flattened and bitter like all campomanesias, so you dont have to bite them, they sprout easily.

The Chamba is an exotic fruit that goes unnoticed by passersby. Although it is easily visible, it is not widely recognized, and it requires a lot of work to preserve it. This fruit has become a symbol of the region of Lengupá, in the department of Boyacá. It is said that Miraflores, the capital of Lengupá, is also the world capital of Chamba. Although relatively new, it started to be known 11 years ago when the first Chamba Festival was held in 2011. Thanks to a course offered by SENA over 10 years ago, the first Chamba producers learned to process it to preserve its pulp and also learned to prepare fruit derivatives such as arequipe, sabajón, creams, and panelitas. The main disadvantage of this exotic fruit is its perishable quality, meaning it has a maximum of one day of useful life because its high water content and acidity eat away at its pulp. It is not like a common fruit that can be preserved in a refrigerator. (in my experience, they last for many days in good condition)
