Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: MANGO recommendation

I like this thread. Keep going!

How long did these take for you guys to flower, mine is in its second year and has filled out its trellis, but no flowers yet.

5 years for mine. But i don't know if that was necessary. It flowered as soon as it found my yangmei and grew up through it and dropped down the other side. Just on the face of the fence wasn't working i'm guessing.

Shane, have you grown any of the seeds out of your crosses? Nice work keep the crosses going!

I tried last year, but none germinated. Not even the selfs. I think my technique is bad.

Well not yet. But yes were excited!

Thanks! Shes premed. UC Davis is the alternative. But she loves the beach. And UMiami has a good reputation for premed and a great double major for it. Offered a nice scholarship too. Nice to be wanted. Maybe if she went to Davis shed finally get interested in gardening!

Anyway ...

Wanted to mark that its flowering again. This year Im manually self pollinating it. Done 7 so far. Couple a day.

Be nice to hear some local info and have someone to ask questions.

Ok. Related question. My daughter is considering university of Miami. Theyre not doing official tours so were looking for someone to show us the campus weekend after next. Anyone have a kid there willing?

Mine or Patricks?

Heres mine. And flowers buds. Sorry for the focus but you can see the typical flower is 2-3mm. The thick leaf seedling is almost 1cm.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Interstock graft
« on: April 04, 2021, 12:20:40 PM »
It just from a time perspective. I would be faster, one or two months ahead.
There are some benefits using an interstock.
Say you have calcareous soil but can't use FD to dwarf the tree.

No way I would talk a knife to a two month old graft. So them both at once are wait a year.

Friend just did this with sone fruits and its pushing at least.

Will keep yall posted. It actually could be the same as that thick leaf one. He can jump in and clarify.

Hi Shane , it probably is the same as Jim's thick leaf as I got seeds in a seed swap of 7 varieties all at the same time and from 6 different people I do have at least 4 or 5 very distinct looking/shaped leaves and some really great fruit

So the graft was from a 'thick leaf' seedling? Not 'thick leaf' itself?

Fantastic. Thanks Patrick! He got it.

Put me down for one Biqi and one Dongkui just to support the cause.

What is the plan for male trees?

Plant three Manila mangos from HD and start grafting.

A friend of mine (username Whitethorn) can't remember his password and the e-mails to reset it aren't arriving in his e-mail account. He only uses one e-mail so can't create a new account.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Are lemon and limes usually grafted?

In california my memory (from touring one of the nurseries that does it) is that lemon's are rooted cuttings and everything else is grafted.
