Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jaboticaba - flowering but not setting fruit

It’s been a while since I’ve been on TFF... but #Coronacation has me spending more time in my yard again.

I’ve got a couple jabos in the qround - and in the last couple years I’ve only had ONE fruit!  That was years ago, and that jabo hasn’t event flowered since.    Meanwhile, my largest (now over 6’ tall) jabo keeps flowering but I have yet to see a single fruit.  Any ideas?

The flowers opened up - I counted about 20 - and have wilted away without fruit set.

Temperate Fruit Buy, Sell, & Trade / WTB/WTT Low-Chill apple scions

I in Clairemont and have a Granny Smith apple on dwarf stock that is very healthy and produces a decent crop every year - but I'm not a huge fan of Granny Smith apples.  I'm looking to graft some other varieties onto this tree - preferably varieties that have done well in San Diego.

I'm happy to pay for scions or trade.

Anyone have sugar apple growing in San Diego and about to prune?  I'm looking for sugar apple scions - my seedling cherimoya is waking up right now and I want to take advantage and graft onto it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rooting Eugenia Uniflora (Surinam cherry)

Do cuttings of Surinam Cherry root easily?

I've grown a bunch of Pitanga from seed - but it takes forever... and I haven't found a whole lot of info about rooting cuttings.  Has anyone here done it?  Is is faster than seeds or air layers?  What is the best method?  (Highest success rate, fastest to root and fruit)?

I'm trying a test in both soil and water.  I built a cloning kit several years ago (air pots, misters on short interval timer, lighting, etc) that has worked for a number of plants - but it's down right now.  If cuttings work for Eugenia uniflora, I may set it back up again... I've decided I really like this tree in the landscape.

Anyone have an idea of what this might be?

I found it in a small container with a pitanga (surinam cherry) I planted several years ago.  Sometimes when I have seeds that don't germinate, I put them into pots with other plants.  In this case, there was a label in the container - but it was sun faded and I couldn't make out a single letter.  I repotted into its own 1gal container, but want to label it with something other than "mystery" if possible.

Any help figuring out what this might be is appreciated...

I was thinking about adding some more citrus to my yard this year, including Buddha's hand.... but then I found this on my lemon tree today.  It's the only "deformed" fruit out of 50+ currently on the tree.  what gives?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help with Inga ID please

I have this one Inga remaining from 3 different types of Inga fruit I received several years ago... can't find my notes on the fruit, and I moved the seedlings around so many times there is no way my notes would have held up anyway.  Two of the fruits (pods) were long, one was short and fat... again, no idea which this seedling came from.  It was about 8' tall before I topped it and cut back some of the branches.  Hope someone can help ID.

Just walked outside and grabbed a few fruit... and then snapped a picture.  The red, green and yellow is a sure sign of fall.

I have two small jabos (approx 3.5 -4 ' tall).  Not sure which variety they are and if they are the same.  Any help would be appreciated as I plan to add more soon and also want to get nametags made for them.

Here are some jabos I ran across while in Brazil - could use some help identifying them.

Store bought fruit. 1 kilo.  Guessing there were a couple of varieties.  All were very dark in color.  Some had thick skin and others were very thin.




Uncle's tree  Had a couple of flowers only.  He had no idea what variety










Aunt's tree #1  Had a couple of flowers only.  Fruit has a stem.  New growth is red.








Aunt's tree #2  Distinctly different.  More flowers.  Fruit has no stem and not perfectly round.










Restaurant tree  Fruit was red, very tasty, very thin skin.



















Roadside nursery  Trees were 10-12' tall, very little flowering.  Was told they were all sabara.

Here are some photos from most recent trip to Brazil, got back this morning.  Spent half the time in Rio and the other half in Espirito Santo.  I wasn't expecting to find much fruit, but was happy with what I did run across.  Also managed to get some seeds back this time (last year DFW Customs took my seeds and forwarded to APHIS via FedEx - and they went missing; FedEx paid me for the mistake, but it didn't make up for the loss of time)

Jaca (Mole) - courtesy of this uncle - eaten raw and made into a juice






Jaca & Acaca Una fruit - frozen - used for juices



Araca Una - the trees on left and right








Carambola - mother-in-law's tree had a couple fruit and was flowering






Papaya - we planted last July from seed, already 10' tall, but some strange looking fruit




Cannonball - I decided to pick a small cannonball, the kids tried to use it as a soccer ball


Bananas - another uncle has a farm with more than a dozen types of bananas




Palmito - his neighbor has a palmito plantation, we ate the palmito with our BBQ... I'm not a fan


Maracuja / passion fruit - my brother in law had this growing on his fence... sweet pulp, looks like papaya




Araza - can you help identify this one?  Close to psidium guineense, flesh is orange, sweet (banana/pineapple) with just a bit of acidity










Jaboticabas - I found a couple different trees with fruit and bought a kilo at the market (separate thread for help ID'ing jabos)


Icecream - Awesome selection of icecream in tropical flavors.  I had jaca this time.




The seed haul - And they made it back this time!

I just went down to water some of my trees since it's been so hot here... and saw a guava had ripened up.  Ended up picking two of them.  Usually they're about the size of a golfball, maybe a bit bigger.  These were HUGE in comparison.

I just picked my first cherimoya from the Campas tree... I decided to weigh it as well, figuring it would be about a pound.  To my surprise, it weighed in at over a pound and a half.  Can't wait to eat it this weekend.

Can anyone help ID these annona seeds?  Came from an alleged Cherimoya in Ventura, but the fruit was very small for Cherimoya (slightly larger than a tennis ball) and had a horrible flavor - sorry, forgot to take photo of fruit.  It was black by the time it got to me.  The seeds of all Cherimoya I have collected have been almost black in color (very dark brown)... these are a light tan color... hard to tell due to poor lighting, but consider that the feijoa is a medium green and shows in the photos below as very dark green.

Collected 60+ fruit today from the ground around one of the shrubs... ate more than 10 and there are 51 in the photo below (including the one in hand)... quality is good+ (better than last year, NO hint of "perfume", not sure why the difference).

These are some of (couldn't get to all of them) the fruit that had already fallen...


Fruit were collected from the shrub on the left.

I'm looking for some advice on mango grafting... I got a few seedlings going now, basically looking for best practices on:

1) When to graft (at what age/trunk diameter, etc)
2) Where on the trunk to graft (below first node, above first node, as close to soil line as possible, etc)



This seedling is in a 1-gal pot, and is approx. 1' tall

I was given some seeds of this açaí relative and told the fruit holds similar potential.  The tree itself is very attractive, for those who enjoy palms.

My question is related to the USDA/APHIS "Not Approved Pending Pest Risk Analysis" (NAPPRA) designation.  The most recent PPQ (6-2013) states that all material except seeds is regulated, but the far right column states the plant was put on NAPPRA final list effective 5/20/2013.

Anyone familiar with this list and these rules?  Are the seeds still acceptable to import without quarantine?

I will be heading back to Southern California on Friday with seeds collected from my trip to Rio.  I have been eating mangosteen, but this isnt a tree I plan to try to grow myself.

If anyone is interested in the seeds, I would be happy to eat some more fruit.  They are among the most expensive fruits here at roughly $1 USD each (meaning: I won't be bringing back a whole lot of these seeds).

I am looking for eugenias and jaboticaba (all, but especially those other than hybrid/precoce)

I have found, purchased/eaten a lot more fruit than i expected to find during Brazil's "winter", but could use some help from anyone who knows the area in tracking down Jaboticaba (and related, ie Cabeluda) fruits.  I have access to Rio area and Sao Paolo.

This is what I have found so far:

* mangosteen
* mango (lots of variety - from bright orange skin to bright red, purple and all shades between)
* camapu (physalis pubescens)
* papaya (looks like solo, small tasty fruit)
* mamão formosa (very large papaya)
* star fruit (orange sweet variety and yellow acidic variety)
* atemoya (small fruit very good flavor, almost seedless)
* sugar apple
* soursop
* avocado (very large smooth skinned fruit)
* cashew
* passion fruit (yellow, large fruit - the size of cantelope)
* noni
* persimmon
+ all the regulars (bananas, apples, pears, oranges, lime, grape ,strawberry, etc)

I also got to see a 60+ year old jaboticaba (not in fruit or flower) that is 30+ feet tall.  (and a 12 year old tree that was over 15 feet tall)

... If anyone knows the Rio or Sao Paolo area and can point me in the direction of jabo fruits or the people who can lead me to them right now, I would be very grateful.
