Loosing my patience with my M. aureana .
« on: September 21, 2013, 05:54:10 PM »
This tree , that is supposed to fruit in 3 - 4 years is really pissing me of , has been pampered like no other in the orchard , over 3 meters now , the precose right next to it has been fruiting for 2 years . I am starting to doubt it is a jaboticaba branca .... Yes Oscar I fertilized also with wood ash....

I've always been interested in this species but they seem to die really easily for me. Don't know what I was doing wrong. Yours looks like its not too far away from fruiting. I have had some trees that for some reason have just never fruited. I have a 10 foot tall cherry of the rio grande that I bought in 2004 and has never produced a flower, I was trying to air layer it but then thought why would I make more of a variety that does make me any fruits. You might try shocking it or using hormones. I dont know what works on myricaceae but if you find anything I would be interesting on hearing about it.

Did a little searching on jaboticaba:

From: http://www.daleysfruit.com.au/forum/jaboticaba4/
"to induce early fruiting ringbark second half august any 3-4- year old limb provided tree is meter high"

And here: http://www.cloudforest.com/cafe/forum/62073.html
"I have induced another slightly larger tree to flower and fruit at about 5 years, by cincturing some larger branches. They do repair themselves quite well."

And: http://www.rarefruitaustralia.org/2005/12/12/put-jaboticabas-on-your-list/
"In many Australian conditions, seedlings can bear fruit as early as three years after planting, and can be induced to fruit (if taking longer than this) by ring-barking. This can be done when the tree is over a metre high (3-4 years old), by randomly cincturing the odd limb. This ringbarking disturbs the natural flow of plant hormones causing treated limbs to throw out flowers and fruit. August is a good month for your first attempt. Jaboticabas have an extraordinary ability to heal over such wounds, so don’t be fearful."

Sounds like the month you do it is important.  I don't have much experience with them since I killed the only ones I had fairly quickly, but what about holding back nitrogen and giving extra P & K?  Lots of trees flower profusely when they think they are going to die, so maybe you are just taking too good of care of it?  I've heard of people hitting trunks with a baseball bat, or what about root pruning?  Anything to stress the tree a little, but maybe that won't work with this species.

Regards,
Sven

I think everybody has already given you good advice. I tried girdling my jaboticaba, but it didn't help. But i didn't pay any attention to the month girdled. Probably that is important. Do the girdling a month or two before they would normally flower. I think Carlos is wrong and it is M. aureana. I think he is right and you might be giving it too much nitrogen. Less N, and more P and K. Make sure also it gets full sun. Trim trees around it if necessary.
PS i saw Anestor's white jaboticaba tree and was fruiting happily at a bout 4 feet tall.

Rock,
What about the flesh to seed ratio of your fruit?
Thank you.

Carlos and Rock,

Would either of you be interested in selling some seeds the next time your M. aureana fruits?

Jaboticaba fruiting can be faster if they have heavy mulch, extra potassium sulphate, phosphorous and micronutrients and also experience stress from a lack of water every so often. Too much nitrogen can make them drag their ass with first fruiting.

Berto,
Camparing white with Myrciaria cauliflora, it has smaller flesh portion. There are about 2 seeds per fruit in average. I think the seed ratio and fruit size of white jabo is similar to hybrid jaboticaba.
