Kishu tree--how to make the skin taste better?
« on: December 07, 2024, 08:15:47 PM »
I bought a Kishu Mandarin tree for my relatives and it's producing fruit, but for some reason the skin is bitter rather than sweet/perfumy like I taste in the supermarket. Is there some step I'm missing to make the skin taste better?

Thanks.

It depends on the age of the tree, and how long the fruit is left hanging on the tree.

Personally i have never seen Kishu in grocery stores as it doesn't tend to hold up as well shelf stability wise.  I would however like to add that i have always found the skin of Kishu specifically to be a little less than desirable...the fruit on the other hand has a unique berry flavor and is ALWAYS seedless.

I believe you may be comparing apples to oranges ; )

What do you refer to as skin, the orange skin or something else. I have a Kishu tree and the longer you let the fruit hang on the tree the better it tastes, no bitterness I can detect.
I dont eat the orange part, but when I peel the skin off, it’s very fragrant.

Sorry, I meant farmer's Market. :P My bad.

But yeah.

I have noticed, though the skin is also thicker for some reason on the tree. It is about 5-6? years old. I bought it before the pandemic. Does the skin get thinner as it ages?

The ones I buy at the farmer's market have a really delicious fragrant skin, which is why I bought it for them. I had my relatives taste test them before buying the tree.

I find if I rub the Kishu fruit on my skin... it tastes better!

I am going to assume that you are a very a sweet guy and some of your sweetness rubs off onto the fruit.  Therefore this practice might not work for everyone.
