Temperate Fruit Discussion / Blueberry flower bud freeze damage??
« on: April 02, 2021, 05:45:43 AM »
Two of my blueberry variety bushes , one unknown and two bluecrops have a problem with their flower buds. Their buds started swelling very early in the winter ,like december but stayed closed, just had plumped up. Now the one unknown had several flower buds ,and when inspecting them I found out they are dead/ brown inside ....the bluecrops also have fully dead buds, but the majority of them just have their bracts dried out, but the will tiny flower dots between them seem alive .....is this cold burn ?? I really think this is due to the waking up and plumping before the coldest of the winter, the others which had not plumped in the fall are as regular starting to do it now and have fine looking all green flower buds .

How do I prevent them from waking so early ?? They are planted in the ground so I think if this becomes a regular basis happening I will have to grow them in containers and bring them in a basement for winter.....
I will provide pics later this day

I bought myself a grafted mini calamondin plant ,and just read that they are not cold hardy, I was thinking of overwintering it the next winter in my basement with temps that go to 1-2 and up C . Are they tenderer compared to lemons, mandarins, pumello ,which I overwinter there without a problem by now....
Also was wondering about your taste reviels on the fruit, is it worth it ?? Net sais its sour and that its used as a substitute for lemon and lime....

« on: March 08, 2021, 04:59:59 PM »
I have heard that some people sprinkle sulfur on the surface of the soil in theyr greenhouses and then fire it up to disinfect the soil. I just ordered some sulfur for acidifying the soil for my blueberries and got myself wondering for this.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Painting wood with bitumen
« on: March 06, 2021, 12:03:10 AM »
Hi, I want to make a trellis or base for a vanilla orchid and other orchids in general , for my green house . I found a dried tree trunk with pleasant curves and want to use this, and want to paint the bottom to make it last long. Does bitumen release any chemicals in the soil around ?? Anyone done this?? I have painted in the past such wood which then was hammered into the soil, and 5-6 years later ,the painted part was as new and never rotted. I am talking only about the part that sits into the soil ...thank  u very much and have a nice day !!😃

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting dragon fruit seedlings
« on: February 18, 2021, 01:42:48 AM »
I have several rooted dragon fruit(undatus) cuttings which started growing about two weeks ago. I also have some df seedlings of yellow megalanthus which are at cotyledon leave stage now. I want to graft the megalanthus seedlings on the undatus's new growth , but should I wait till the seedlings get bigger ?? I generally want to graft them now since the babies are not doing much on their own and I think the rooted cuttings will give them the power to grow , but if I have to wait ,I will. I watched videos about, and people seem to use seedlings that have grown some , and not only cotyledons ??  Anyone tried ???

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon fruit trellis guestion
« on: February 14, 2021, 03:29:22 PM »
I am planning on making a trellis for my df plants, which I will be planting in the ground in the greenhouse. I know people do make them from concrete poles and I have found thinner ones which will do the trick for me , but need to make the tops on which the plants will be spreading and hanging from. I want to make the tops also from concrete ,like make a mold for them and then cast the together with the pole to make them fuse.
Now the question, is it okay to use a freshly casted form for the plants to grow on, the pole part will be cured and will not release any major chemicals, but the top will be fresh .....anyone has experience ?? Thank u for yall's comments !!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passion fruit surprise
« on: February 09, 2021, 03:06:31 PM »
I was in the basement ,cleaning fallen leaves and other plant debris from the wintering plants there , while cleaning the purple edulis passion fruit's leaves and dried branches I found this lone fruit hanging in there....the taste was ok ,not so flavourful like the ones ripened in the fall , yet pleasant to eat. I will try the seeds ,dunno if they are viable , this will be interesting if they do germinate ....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoya overwintering question
« on: February 01, 2021, 05:51:16 AM »
I was wondering if a cherimoya could survive in a unheated basement with no light and temps around 5c? It does not freeze in the basement but the temp in the coldest periods can go below 5C also so...they will surely lose theyr leaves and I thought in this process could they be forsed into dormancy for around 4 months ,with no light and almost no water ?? I successfully am overwintering in there for a second winter pasiflora edulis on caerulea rootstock and several big tamarilos without any cold damage to roots or above ground parts.... tanks !!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passiflora ligularis temperatures
« on: January 19, 2021, 07:57:39 AM »
Does it like a hot greenhouse in the summer , or will it appreciate the more cooler temps outside ?? I read they like cooler temps compared to edulis. Last summer the plants were in a gh which was getting around 40C sometimes and they had some kind of a problem on their leaves and did not grew very well.
Will they be better outside ?
