Giant lau lau / syzigium coarctatum
« on: March 05, 2022, 07:56:27 PM »
Anybody growing this?  I found some on tbe ground at fruit and spice park today and it was like eating a juicy rose with texture of marshmallow.  Oddly good.  I have never tried any other syzigium so I don't know how similar it may be to malay appe, wax jambu

Haven’t heard much, but it’s from Polynesia. Last time I saw a source for seeds it was 20 dollars each.

That flavor you describe is what syzygium jambos-rose apple tastes like, really good.

Wax apple tastes like a mild pear on the outside but the inside is like a cotton that doesn't have much flavor. This was my favorite tropical fruit because i like pears. it's refreshing when cold out of the fridge. The Malay apple is bigger and has more "taste" but contrary to most i preffer a "mild" kind of fruit. Some people find these fruit plain, not me.

Jambolan or S.Cumini tried it once and i found the taste was amazing. Some people find them plain. These are said to be good for diabetics.

I was able to try some also last time I was at the fruit and spice park. My family liked it the best out of all the szygiums we ate.

What fruit was available down there? Thinking of planning a trip this week.

These, canistel, mamey possibly (none on ground that I saw), other syzgiums looked ripe but none on ground, lots of sapodillas, some kind of figs that didn't seem palatable, red sugar apples look ripe but not on ground yet, loquats all over

Possibly, but the sign on the tree at the park says coarctatum
