Cecropia peltata aka Trumpet Tree - Pictures
« on: March 21, 2023, 12:11:11 PM »
Hey everyone!

Wanted to jump in on the trend of posting pictures with all this good weather we've been having. I was unfamiliar with Cecropia peltata until I stumbled upon one at the WPB Rare Fruit Council plant sale last year. Hope to find another at the same sale this weekend.

The pictures show the development of the "gummy worm" fruit. I have a strong belief that the fruits will be aborted since the plant is very young, but im hopeful to try one.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or advice on how to make my Cecropia as happy and strong as possible, limited useful information online. PS - I have ONLY a female tree. I am aware of the invasive potential when males are brought into the mix (plus they dont sell males).

Thanks!!

Wanted to update my post with fruit development, looks like more on the way. Would still love some advice on taking care of this cecropia!
At this point I really want to know when this first fruit is ripe, the color is an awesome gold right now. A shame that the fruit is small but excited that it wasn't shed off.

I have one in the ground that is about 5'-6' tall. Seems healthy but no idea of sex. I thought you couldn't get fruit without male and female? So far this tree has been pretty self sufficient.

Thanks yall! Hope the fruit is all its cracked up to be.

@Kankan my understanding is the females will produce sterile fruit w/o a male, and that if you have both, they become a nuisance with the # of seedlings they produce.
But honestly so little useful information online, idk the extent of that if there's a couple in a garden. They are a pioneer species, so I would assume a well-established and maintained garden/yard wouldn't have issues.

How has the fruit been for you?

Mine hasn't fruited. Im not sure its all that common in S California. I just took a picture of it today, looks like it got a beaten up with our winter but good weather ahead so I assume it will be fine, hopefully I have a female!

Best of luck!

Regardless of gender, such a gorgeous tree.

Another update for the good people on this forum.

Last few weeks I haven't really paid attention to the Cecropia tree, but yesterday noticed it was holding a ton more fruit and one that appeared ripe (yellow stalk, gummy-worm texture).
Picked it this morning and saw the ants were already enjoying the sweet juices; to my surprise it tasted kind of like watery BBQ sauce. I can assume a lot of factors went into the fruit not being ideal, especially since such a small tree is holding so much fruit, but wow I did not expect it to taste so bad. Cool texture though, was a real "fall off the bone" type flesh.

Hoping next season they are sweeter.

Make some FLManDan Watery BBQ sauce out of those damn things!

Either way, nice job getting to this point. Hopefully they evolve into a tangy sweet BBQ sauce flavor.

Foreskin fruit, 2004 youtube poop, and watery bbq sauce. LMFAO  ;D ;D

I appreciate the comments yall, hoping next harvest is better. If these Maqui i planted have good germination, they may just replace this weirdo tree.

Cecropenis, oh yeah . Can’t get enough.

in a stand still line of trucks miles long, waiting to get into the big mulch party, all i see is cecropia , strawberry guava and albizia.

Thats a big yikes snapshot of invasives!

Fortunately, mine is female and in a large pot; not trying to burden the neighbors. Plenty of brazilian pepper trees and mimosas around already.

No doubt! Some were drive by pickable as I slow crawled for an hour or so in line for mulch.
