Selection 1: ‘Sherman’. Early Ripening (October) and cold hardy. The tree is actually deciduous. Fruit is seedy. Flavor is mild, but with solid brix in the 12 range. Ratios range from 14.5-14.8. Not graft compatible with US 942. Its primary drawbacks are thorniness and canker susceptibility. Released and cleaned. Displayed in October.

A casual taste test with 4 people, in general order of preference. Fruit are my own or from Citrus Expo. 

1) Sugar Belle, taste like smarties, zing!  sweet and sour.  Brix 12

2) Juanita, juicy, flavorful, orangey.  Brix 11

3) Ventura Lemondarin, sweet, sour, lemony. Brix16

4) Early Pride "better than cuties" very sweet, juicy, mild orange flavor. Brix 11

5) Sweet Frost, very sweet, good flavor. Brix 10.5

6) Owari, sweet, bag of juice, bland.  Brix 8.5

7) Changsha, a little juice, OK flavor Brix 12

Loch Laurel, Juicy, less flavor than Early Pride. Brix 8

9) Early St. Anne.  Bland. Brix 6

Poncius hybrids:

US119 seedless, yellow skin, sweet, very orange smell and taste, an earth taste giving way to the orange.  Hard to separate pulp from seed.  Brix 12

Bishop Citrandarin 851 F2  Bitter then milder, not Poncirus flavor Lemony scent.  Bright orange skin.  Taste popular enough that request was made for seed.  Brix 10

Pomelo x Poncirus F2 plant 1-2,  grapefruit taste, would go well in gin, sour, not Poncirus flavor Brix 8

From Expo, Unknown mislabeled Poncirus hybrid, scent of grapefruit, floral, 'Wow, OMG' 'Like Sour Patch Kids' musky pine 'Like you made a citrus beaver'  Brix 9

It is going to freeze next week.  Do citrus fruit survive without damage at 28 F, -2.2 C temperature?

June flowers on a couple Poncirus hybrids set fruit and I want them to have as much time on the plant as possible for the seeds to develop.

After several years, a cross between Miho and Poncirus is about to bloom.  The pinkish purple color is slightly more intense than shown, and the smallest buds have more color.  I have only seen this color on lemons and limes before. 

When trying to speed up blooming on a seedling, does the rootstock make a difference? 

After a few years of success and some major dieback failure with different kinds of protection for this Owari, relatives settled on this solution last year.  A portable carport from Harbor Freight.  It has four sides, one of which is designed to be opened with zippers.  It covers 10' x 17' and is 9' high.  It goes on sale regularly.  It is big enough to handle two trees.  Fruiting this last season was the best yet, with well over 200 fruit. 

Some light, but not much gets through.  On the defunct Citrus Forum there is a posting of a citrus tree kept several weeks in total darkness without harm.  This carport demonstrates that fact also. It was covered for over two months. It showed no leaf drop or other damage when uncovered last spring.  One side is folded up on most days to keep the temperature down, but closed on cold nights.  The low last year was 10 F, -12 C.  It was kept above those temperatures but not necessarily above freezing with lights.  The frame was left in place all year.
