Yes, I grow SRA 771 and another plant of unknown origin, plants look identical, but fruits from unknown plant are usually seedless and taste is better than SRA 771. Taste is bland, when fruits hang too long on tree.

Plant from Tintori nursery is SRA 771.
This accession came to the University of California via W.P. Bitters in 1.1. 1963 as a seed from Shizuoka pref., Shimizu-shi, Japan.
Catalogue number CRC 3476 citrus shunkokan.

In 1987 budwood was imported to SRA INRA-CIRAD France screenhouses. After declared as a disease free, it received SRA number 771.
Citrus shunkokan is a very good citrus.

Citruses where not that popular in the past as they are now. Common people where focused on plants usable as energy source. Only really rich people could grow plants just for ornamental purpouse or as culinar oddity. For example, for centuries, candied peel was the most important usage of citrus.

In the past, INRA had page with all info about their plants. Some of their plants came from Riverside collection, but that page no longer exists. If tamurana came from Riverside, it is not true tamurana.

I'm really curious, if citrus tamurana came to France and Portugal as budwood from Japan, or as seeds. I saw at UCR USA page, that CRC 3092 is a seedling, so definetly not true citrus tamurana, because tamurana is strictly monoembryonic.

Citrus General Discussion / Hime Koharu seedling.
« on: March 22, 2025, 03:37:26 AM »
In 2018, I got one seed of Hime Koharu. There was one seed in the whole packet of fruits. It formed two seedlings, one grows more vigorous, more upright, anoher one grows more bush like. They grow together in ground. This year the bigger one, 4 m tall showed first flowerbud on the top.

To create satsuma like, cold hardy hybrid, bendizao mandarin looks more promising as mother plant.
It produces seeds without any problem, fruit looks identical to satsuma.

Since there’s somebody processing vanilla in your area you might just sell them the green vanilla. The largest processor in Mexico buys green vanilla from more than 500 small farms.
If, before the vanilla bean begins to ripen on the vine, you wrap a thread around it so it doesn’t split open it can ripen on the plant without any process. This vanilla is of very good quality but lacks the presentation for selling as a whole premium bean although for making an extract and/or kitchen use it is the best.
Saludos, Peter

I read, that vanilla bean has to go trought fermentation before use.
So, according to your experiences it is not necessary process for kitchen use?

Resaults only show one thing. Old established cultivars carry some strains and new cultivars from seedlings not. Some mild strains protect plants against severe strains.

I heard about poor quality fruits on volkameriana in the past, and everybody told me it, when I bought Avana apireno from italian nursery on volkameriana. It was in bag, for farm growing, but I was sure that italians know what they do, and time proved my thoughs. Avanas on this tree are in top 3 of my mandarins. So, I think that volkameriana does not devalve fruit taste. As I said Oscar Tintori is number one in the market of ornamental citruses in pots in Italy and they use volkameriana.

I read study about rootstock for ornamental citruses in pot  and the result was, that the best rootstock is volkameriana, especially for lemons. It gaves compact crown and intense flowering. Oscar Tintori nursery uses exclusively volkameriana for lemons and mandarins.
