Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / ISO any types of budwood
« on: October 30, 2019, 04:49:27 PM »
I am going to be making my first attempt at micro grafting. I have several FD, poncirus, and other random citrus saplings to practice on and all I need is some budwood to get going. Does anyone have any I could purchase? I am not sure if this is the right time of year to ask or not but worth a shot. In wisconsin so no worries on regulations. Thanks!

Cold Hardy Citrus / True hardiness of Flying Dragon
« on: October 29, 2019, 09:02:22 PM »
I'm sprouting a ton of flying dragon and I would like to know the true hardiness of the tree itself? I have seen sites say that it is hardy even down to zone 4 of parts of Canada! I'm currently in zone 5A and would love to eventually plant one in the ground, or even just not worry and let it thrive in pots on the patio. Again I've been told different things by all over, some say zone 6 is the lowest, others say 5A, and a few found say 4B. Also, I haven't found an answer to this question either: being indoor in pots they dont actually molt their leaves.. will they still fruit or does flowering only precede a stage of leaf growth via spring?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Indoor citrus, Lighting length time and warmth ??
« on: October 26, 2019, 10:56:19 AM »
Hello!

I just finally went big rather than going cheapo and purchasing 5$ grow lights at the hardware store. I purchased a WHOSLED 600W that puts out around 1200 umol/s/m2, and a smaller 2FT T5 bulb set for my seedlings.. How long should I run these lights for the maximum yield of growth while still not racking up a huge energy bill? Looking for opinions! I also have a germination mat underneath both keeping the roots at a good 78-83 degrees F. The surrounding temps go anywhere from 68-76F throughout the day into the night (may get a little warmer with the more powerful lights I'm putting in). What are your guys' opinions? I currently have over 50 citrus seedlings coming consisting of trifoliate, FD, and swindle, along with some misc dwarf poms and coffee.

Thanks for any input!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Arabica Dwarf Coffee
« on: October 21, 2019, 09:48:17 AM »
I have some seedlings coming up, they're arabica dwarf coffee plants. I know nothing about these and would like to learn a little! What is their general care? What soils and temps do they like? How long before they reproduce from seeds??

Cold Hardy Citrus / Flying Dragon from Seeds
« on: October 16, 2019, 03:54:10 PM »
So I remember seeing somewhere on this forum that FD only grow 50% true to seed. Being self fertile oranges and not having any other contaminants, is that still true? Will the other 50% still be useful as rootstock or have FD hardiness features? Also how can one tell which seedlings are true and which are not?

Also, I was wondering since flying dragons are deciduous, do they need the cold temps and to molt their leaves in order to flower/fruit the following year? Or will they still flower if I force it to stay evergreen? (Keep warm temps and light throughout winter).

Citrus General Discussion / -Grafting + Dwarf Citrus Questions-
« on: October 11, 2019, 03:28:14 PM »
I am trying to set out to create my own Dwarf fruit-bearing citrus. I am a beginner to grafting and have yet to attempt it but I have several small saplings that are very healthy. I have some naturally dwarfing rootstock, like a few flying dragons and I have a few others as well. I have seen a lot of grafting in action, mostly on apples being how far north I am, only youtubed citrus grafting and have seen many of fruitmentor's videos on grafting citrus, as well I have all the proper tools to graft, (germination mat, humidity, temp regulation, grow lights, am I missing anything?). I was wondering at what age is best to graft clippings to another tree that I want to stay dwarfed? Or if there are any real techniques that would work better for indoor grafting? I live in zone 5A so they must be kept indoors in the winter, but I have the warm environment replicated rather well in my growing closet haha.

Thanks in advance for any tips and info! I absolutely LOVE learning new things about citrus!

I'm preparing for the winter in the north now that nightly temps are dipping below 45 at times and have my citrus indoors at all times now. They're in the closet with a 125watt full spectrum grow light (bulb) and a germinating mat for heat. I have a calamondian planted from seed roughly 4 months old, a Flying Dragon, and soon to add some other trifoliate orange, along with my other mangos and pomegranates (not as concerned about those though). I was wondering if that was sufficient to keep the trees out of dormancy and continue growth? Should I add more lights? More wattage? What might give better results?

I'm looking to figure out some other naturally occurring dwarf verities in citrus that I could get my hands on. I live in wisconsin so must be in containers so cold hardy isnt a big deal being I can bring indoors, just trying to explore to see what I can find for dwarfing rootstocks that I can grow from seeds other than flying dragon! Im new to citrus and have a lot to learn yet, Thanks!

Hey, new to the forum.

I recently ordered a Flying Dragon sapling online (supposed to be roughly 1ft tall already) and am looking to eventually use its seeds to plant more rootstock for eventual grafting. I live in a Very northern climate so they are container bound. I am wondering if anyone has any general information on these trees as nowhere else online seems to. Also, if anyone knows the time they usually take to fruit from seed under ideal conditions (i.e. 3 years?) or just general growth vigor, how long they take to mature. I will be experimenting with these as I don't know of any other naturally occurring citrus Dwarf rootstock.

Thanks for the help in advance, anyone!
