Here’s a picture of my Guachocote (Malphigia Mexicana) Mexican Cherry today. Seems to like the climate here in So Cal 10b.
Anyone else growing this one?

Honestly, fruit kinda sucks, IMO, and yes you would need to add a lot of sugar to eat it because it’s not good by itself, why grow fruit that needs sugar? I guess some people enjoy grapefruit with a little sugar... I got a nice plant from Nate at Wildlands that fruited but no one liked it so it got donated to the compost bin.

I highly recommend Irenes mangos, we’ve purchased the last two seasons from her and have been very happy with everything. You’ll get a nice selection of different varieties all individually wrapped. Post office fumbled our package and sent it to Oregon this last order, wtf? Package was delayed two days and box was beat up but mangos were still flawless. Awesome packaging job and attention to detail. Thanks Irene  :)

Heres a ripe fruit from a babaco plant I bought a couple years ago from wild lands plants. Taste great with a little lemon and sugar!

Fruit that needs sugar added to it...Interesting

It does look like Calmei is a bit mixed up with their packaging...Ordered a box of Eastern giant and sweet violet. All the fruit in the Eastern giant box looks legit, but in the sweet violet box there is also Eastern giant mixed in, seems like they got low on sweet violet (there were only 3 boxes left when I ordered) so they mixed in eastern giant to fulfill the order.

Fruit is delicious though and the kids absolutely love it, its nice that you can cut off pieces for kids to eat so they don’t have to mess with the seed. Happy to be growing this one! If you don’t have a tree you should consider adding a tree to your garden.

Just noticed this fruit and wondered how long until it is ripe.

Needs to get Maroon/Red color, it ripens usually around September or so (at least my plant does).

That’s awesome you guys are fruiting this. What does it taste like?

If the buyer wants to part with a pup and ship. It *eye brow wiggle* I'm here and looking to add more banana to my yard.

I can send you pup(s), I’ll send you a pm.

Holy cow Nate,

That is a huge dwarf Brazilian in a pot. That is a great deal for someone. Mine is holding fruit now and should ripen next month. This is an excellent banana variety for home growers. The level of intense sweetness is unmatched by anything you can buy in the store.

Johnny

Thing was a beast Johnny, busted through the side of that pot, had kind of forgot about it because it was hiding behind the play house, that was until a gust of wind knocked it over and it “pruned” a couple branches off a stone fruit tree. Always ready for these sweet bananas to start turning yellow around this time. Woo hoo no more eating grocery store bananas!  :)

If you grow one banana for fruit this should be the one. Incredible sweet taste, nice sized bananas, no propping or staking required. Trees max out around 15ft. Trees look good and stay green throughout winter here. Tree needs to be planted in the ground ASAP, and will fruit quick once it does. There are also a couple nice pups coming up in the pot. Will prob need truck/van to transport. local pick up.

Produces nice sized racks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: How do i ship fruit seedlings?
« on: May 28, 2024, 11:17:38 AM »
Ship them in flat rate boxes, with the pot taped to the side of the box. Water the plant, get some wet paper towel, put it on the soil surface, then saran wrap the pot.

You technically should have permits and phytosanitary certificates, but many send without.

If the package/seedling is light weight (smaller than 1 gallon pot) and you’re shipping to the west coast, even mid west you will probably save your customer money if you ship by weight instead of the flat rate price. Flat rate cost can be double, sometimes triple the cost of shipping by weight for small packages. You can always refund your customer the difference in shipping cost if you don’t know what the exact cost will be when you’re quoting them a price.

Hey Simon does your Biqi drop most of its leaves right before a new vegetative flush? Mine does, prob looses over 50% of it’s old leaves. Wondering if this is normal? Thanks! Also, your Yangmei fruit pics are starting to make my mouth water a little bit...

Wow that thing is a beast Kaz! Nice find

Thanks for the reply’s! Sounds like fruit production was all over the place this year...There’s a large tree in our neighborhood that is/was loaded so I don’t know if it’s a variety thing or what. Was thinking it was because of El Niño but since there’s other trees in the neighborhood with lots of fruit I don’t think that’s the culprit. I did prune our tree in September or October last year so maybe it was pruned too late in the season, looking back at a pic from November 2022 the tree was already loaded with flowers. I was told by a member, however, that even if you prune your tree when it first sets flowers, it can flower again, so in theory you could extend your season, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. There were branches that didn’t get pruned on our tree and they still didn’t get any flowers so it’s pretty confusing.

My advice to fellow loquat growers would be to prune your trees soon after fruiting is done and there’s no loquats left on the tree, don’t wait till fall as I think that may have been what led to no flowers/fruit.

Our tree also gets almost full sun so I don’t think it’s a sun/light issue.

Loquats are one of our favorite fruits we look forward to eating and since we got squat if anyone’s willing to trade fruits please let me know.

Our tree in full flower mode November 2022

Here’s another update of my Yangmei. The weather is getting warmer and we are also getting more sunlight hours and I’m not sure if it’s the increased light, warmer temps, or a combination of both that is causing my blooms to convert to vegetative growth.

If it’s the heat that is causing the blooms to turn vegetative, the growers in warmer climates such as those growing in Hawaii or Southern Florida will have to ensure they get sufficient cold stimulus to get blooms and fruit set. Alternatively, they can look for varieties that may not require as much cold stimulus to trigger blooms.

My male tree still has blooms on it but there are very few male blooms left. The good news is that it appears this male produces enough blooms/pollen to pollinate the earlier and later blooming varieties. In April, there are very few blooms on my male and female plants, everything is definitely winding down in terms of blooms.

Here’s my Ann Hai on Californica rootstock. It is growing in a large pot and it set a ton of fruit. I stopped counting after 200. So far, I have not noticed any fruit drop.

Awesome work man...Congratulations are in order!!! Guess you don’t need to buy from Weee this year 8) Super cool to see those fruits on your trees!

Our loquat tree hasn’t flowered or fruited this year. Last year we had a ton of fruit. Is anyone else experiencing this horribleness?

Happy spring. Still have some nice cane available but time is running out as some buds are starting to break. Also open to trades, looking for Jamaican Stripe. Thanks

Joe, nice growth on the Shine.

If anyone else has the Shine growng now with leaves, can you post it here, I'd like to compare the leaves of Shine to my tree.

If you show me yours, I will show you mine. I also have a Red Shine grape growing.

Couple sticks I threw in the ground a couple months ago are starting to grow nicely here. 2 out of the 3 put in the ground took. I showed you mine... ;)

Lots of flowers here too. I love the red.  Can’t remember if male or female (I think female) but I’m still looking for healthy vegetative growth over fruit.  Maybe next year I’ll graft on some scions of opposite sex but it’s fun to have it healthy and thriving!

Rad! What rootstock is it on? Thx
