Broadleaf papaya bisex plant produces fruit
« on: September 19, 2020, 11:29:51 PM »

The original broadleafed Papaya female with red veined leaves and deep purple petioles gave rise to some bisex offspring with large red fleshed fruit, red veined leaves and the purple petioles. The less flavoursome yellow fleshed fruit of the female really had to bow to the superior bisex offspring. Outcrossing produces greener stems and green veins. Interestingly no males seem to have been produced. My big bisex tree blew over in a storm and the first fruit from a side shoot was just plucked. A modest 6lbs. This is still very close to the original lineage.

I still think they are the most ornamental and striking papayas

If the leaf stems are purple does it mean it is self pollinating? I bought a papaya that was supposedly bisex but it never set fruit.

Bisex plants are all about the flowers. The purple stems are present on female and bisex broadleafs and I only mentioned it as an indication that it hasn't outcrossed to the extent of losing that characteristic.

Gave a friend some broadleaf papaya bisex seeds about two years ago. Saw his plant yesterday and it is a whopper with 3kg plus fruit on.

Bisex broadleaf have reddish fruit that taste pretty good and females have yellow rounded fruit that taste bland. Many papaya taste poor its true especially some yellow types grown in cooler climates. The taint is called 'nasturtium' and all with this quality are fit for the mulch heap only. Redder, thick fleshed types grown in warm places can taste very nice and the solo types from Hawaii are examples of good tasting ones. Generally a very well coloured papaya that is long or egg shaped with little air space and feels heavy are better.

Here is a great tasting selection.
