Some of my cold protection prep
« on: December 23, 2022, 04:26:08 PM »
I purchased a 9 x 4 portable greenhouse for cold protection around 2 goldfinger bananas, also wrapped with burlap and added a small space heater.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08CRQZJNB?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1

Barbados cherry- Frost blanket with 4 poles. Xmas lights inside.
Sweet almond- Blankets and hay
Cold sensitive citrus - Burlap wraps around trunk. Frost blankets with 4 poles
Cherry of Rio Grande. Frost blanket, xmas lights

I put cold sensitive plants in shed

My older citrus I only put hay around trunk and watered all cold sensitive trees well. Not much else I can do.

Thank you. 4 straight days of 20-22 weather. I expect I will take some losses. Did the best I can.

Looking good! Make sure everything is well watered, that can really help. Good luck!

I'm right there with you.  I have the greenhouses up. I'm trying some candle / clay pot heaters and so far it is keeping the temp steady. I also invested in mylar emergency blankets and lined the inside of the greenhouses. It says they retain 90 percent of body heat so just maybe they will help hold in the heat from lights and the candles. I read somewhere they also use them for indoor grow tents too. I'm not trying to keep it above freezing but more like slowing the temp drop enough until the sun can heat up the tents again.

I’m also in zone 8b. You may want to try taking a 9 or 12 inch saw blade and cutting out the root ball of the bananas and storing the entire stalk in your garage to replant come spring. It takes me only a few mins to pop out. That way a freeze won’t make the bananas start from the ground again

That sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the tip.

Beforehand I was pushing 7ft potted bananas in and out of my garage like a looney. I wish I knew the member on here that gave me the tip
