My jujube li tree is not producing edible fruits, why?
« on: January 16, 2023, 01:08:37 AM »
I planted a Jujube Li tree in 2016, the tree looks healthy, but we never received any edible fruits (only got some non-edible ones last years and very likely this year as the fruits are still small on the tree, but the shape doesn't look right).
Does anyone know why the tree does this? Thanks.

the suckers from around my trees make small round fruit that are not good. That's the rootstock. D

You might have got a bad one. I would say Two years is the longest it should take from a graft/ If I knew what I know now i would have planted jujubes 10 years ago.

Are you sure it is a grafted tree?
The Chinese jujube is a temperate tree and needs some chill hours.
Is anyone growing Chinese jujube in your area?
I also heard to buy two trees for pollination

Thai/Indian jujube would be best to grow in Australia. Just ate one off one of our trees; crunchy, refreshing, and lightly sweet. As mentioned, all the Chinese ones need cold to flower. Would be growing them if I could.

I didn't realize its that cool in Sydney. Even more reason to take a trip!

Many Chinese jujubes require another tree for fruiting, but Li is supposed to be self-fertile. Still, another tree might help. It is also possible you ended up with a different tree than labeled.

I checked with ChatGPT, and it said it could be the tree gene is changed, but the seller Dayley fruit insists it's a Jujube Li tree.

Have you had success making more? I would really like to try growing this variety.

The shape of the fruit looks similar to immature Li. Is it getting enough sunlight?
The nice grass indicates the area is fertile but may throw some fertilizer just to check it out.

Is it difficult to topwork a jujube? I had my scion killed by landscapers and the rootstock is now a 4" caliper tree with 1cm inedible fruits and vicious thorns.

Are there any good sources for scion wood?

I am in Sydney as well. My Li Jujube tree started growing fruits the 2nd year from when I planted it in probably 2018? The fruits are edible except most of them got fly maggots inside! However this year no maggots anymore. Don’t known why? I remember last summer the jujube tree didn’t flower nor set fruits. So maybe all maggots producing insects died of hunger from short of food last year? Interesting. But at least it proves Li Jujube tree does bear edible fruits in Sydney Australia. It is very hot today and this summer. I bought the tree from a Vietnamese lady in Melbourne through mail.

Chinese Jujubes are technically "self-fertile," but they will reliably fruit more with a pollinator.
