« on: Today at 12:35:38 PM »I have eaten Both fresh picked NZL's and fresh picked Meyer's NZL are sweeter and much less sour than Meyer lemon. NZL lemons can be eaten out of hand. Meyer lemons are said to eat the enamel of your teeth at half the speed of of a eureka lemon. NZL lemons are not good for cooking and the peal is sweet with a mild bitter after taste. If you are looking to eat out of hand the NZL is the only choice. If you are looking for use in drinks and cooking go Meyer.
How does NZL compare to sanbokan?

I have a seed grown finger lime that turned 4 in January. It has flowered and fruited the first time this month. I can't wait to see what the inside is. Purple caviar would be nice if I can't have a seedless one lol I know, I know, wishful thinking. I also have a seed grown key lime that appears to not have seeds. The most seeds I have seen in a fruit (if there's any), since it started fruiting (3rd season now I think) was 2.

According to the node count theory, pruning the tree vertically will put the node count back to where it was pruned. I have a seed grown finger lime that got damaged by the freeze when it was two winters ago when it was about 2 feet tall (no flower). More than half of its growth froze. This year, the tree is about 3 feet tall. It now has so many flowers and some fruit set both on the middle and bottom branches. If the node count is accurate, does that mean that finger limes fruit at about 3 feet?

If you like oranges and you like mandarins, then you should like the taste of sumo/shiranui. You must have tasted a dud, try getting some fresh home-grown sumo and decide if you like it or not. I have pretty much every type of oranges and madarins that people say tastes really good, and my sumo/shiranui fruits are very good as Brian mentioned. So, I'm thinking you may have just eaten some average store purchased sumo maybe?
That's right. I had my first sumo (store bought) in maybe '17? I could not understand the hype about it. I probably tried the fruit several times. But I have not tried a home grown one. Same thing with owari, gold nugget and orri. I liked them the first time I tried them. But. like you said, nothing is comparable to home grown.

This is where water remains even after completely draining. Your trees roots above the perched water table look fine. 50 percent peat an 50 percent coco bark is not a very good medium. A 5-1-1 would be a much ;better soil blend.
There's this thing going on citrus groups on facebook where some people are saying bark based medium are garbage. That bark turns into "muck" in about 6 months, it's not sustainable, it's useless, and does not provide any nutrition to the tree. Makes my ears hot every time I read them.

I have never had an owari or gold nugget but I planted an owari outside this year. I was so excited until I read they are not very good tasting in hot climates. We have about 3 months of over 100-106 degrees or higher. But I’m planning to use some shade cloth. Is this claim true?

I live in a hot climate and my owari is good. same with my young seto, it's good.

I think the risk with the miracle gro 24-8-16 is ammonium toxicity as its nitrogen form is mainly urea and a little bit of ammoniacal nitrogen. As to the micro nutrients that Jack's have in comparison with miracle gro, I have no idea.

« on: April 03, 2024, 07:32:51 AM »I don't think you will be able to tell the difference. i have most of the lemon varieties UCR/CCPP sells and there is nothing really special about any specific one.
You might just get the VI-692 or the VI-929 for starters. I have a fruiting VI-692, 2K and it doesn't taste any different than the Lisbon or Eureka lemon to me. Also tasted the Amafi Coast lemon and not a lot of difference to me.
You might like the 9lb lemon, check it out on the variety database, the fruit is huge, gets to 9lbs if properly feed. My lemon only got to 3 lbs since I grafted to a weak rootstock.
Most lemons have many crops a year so it should be the same for most. The popular variety from your list is the Santa Teresa, I have it grafted so I should be able to compare the taste to the 2K this year.
Kaz, Have you made limoncello with your lemons?
You might think about getting the Seedless Lisbon or the Seedless Eureka, tastes the same as the seeded version and has good fruit production.

Best decision I ever made when it comes to caring for my trees. You won't regret it. I will also modify my mix as it gets too hot here as well. A bag of Jack's is about $55-$70, I forgot, but it lasts a long time. Ii don't really know how many potted citrus trees I have but it does last for months. I have also started fertilizing my in ground citrus with it for a few months now.

That's about right, I fertilize weekly but not weakly. I live in zone9a which requires me to water my trees more often. Trees are in 511 fir bark.
