Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: M4 Leaf Issues ..
« on: April 11, 2024, 08:39:49 PM »
I remember seeing Har say this is a deficiency and to fertilize lightly with Potassium/Mag. But I’ve also seen people say it can be from Salt OR fertilizer burn if you just fertilized maybe? too heavy on the fertilizer…? Not sure. Sorry.

Also “Zill -40-17 “ is an amazing coconut/sugarloaf flavor mango that I gave a 9/10 also so must be a really good mango.

I know next to nothing about the tree characteristics of 40-17 AND Gary.

Anyone have experience growing either ?

3
Bovine you got me cracking up but in all seriousness I had to look in my mango -review book and sure enough I had a Gary last year that tasted almost exactly like a sugarloaf close to the skin. I rated it 9/10 so I must have really like that Gary coconut flavor!

4
I love the taste of Gary but never planted one because I hear they are shy bearers. I also think Gary is more citrusy then coconuty but my pallet is different as everyone’s is.

5
I planted a cherimoya seedling in the scorching Miami sun it’s been there for about a year and it’s fine HOWEVER it is an orange cherimoya supposedly better adapted to the Caribbean sun.

I have M-4, Pickering and Sugarloaf. All very disease resistant and excellent flavor. If you're after production on limited space, the Pickering is the winner. Late season M-4 is the winner.
Edward and Karen Michelle are great, disease-free varieties, but I wouldn't rate them in the coconut category, more like classic peach flavor.

Very interesting I’ve had many tell me Pickering is coconut flavored mango but In my experience I only find it to be that the late crop Pickering has a mild coconut flavor if limited rainfall when it’s on tree.

My Pickering and M4 are  also very disease resistant.

My sugarloaf has been SMOKED by powdery mildew this year and it has an issue with producing majority male flowers but I’m told the tree will grow Out of this as it matures more. The sugarloaf mango is worth the wait for me. It’s My favorite.

Edward and Karen Michelle have some excellent coconut notes and excellent flavor on certain years for my tastebuds. Both  Karen Michelle and M4 taste like a Dulles down sugarloaf to me  which I LOVE.  I never tasted peach in either of them. The mango “peach” flavor  that I know is more like Duncan flavor.

Thanks for the great response.

Absolutely Karen Michelle
Is excellent like an improved Edward. Which I love. I love both Edward and Karen Michelle. But I have neither planted and so I can’t speak to the characteristics of the actual tree, only the fruit. I Would
Love to know your vote and would Love to know your buddy experience growing Karen Michelle. Thanks Bovine

Interesting thank you for responses.

Yes I have tasted mild coconut flavor in Pickering before and my Pickering tree does very well so far.

My fellow Mango Maniacs. Lend me your ears.

I’ve been following the “coconut mango collection” cultivars from Gary Zill for quite some time. I’ve been trying to evaluate peoples opinions and experiences since about 2017. That makes me still very new to this.

Of the mango cultivars people would claim to have “coconut” flavor i want to hear everyone’s experiences with them please. If I don’t mention one please add it to the list. I would love to know about:

Disease resistance
Ease of blooming
Production
Flavor

I’m a huge fan of most mangos that have coconut flavor. Excluding one which I won’t mention for fear or bias.

Of the “coconut mangos”, In my yard I grow

Sugarloaf
M-4

but of-course there is also

Pina colada
Coconut cream
And maybe more im forgetting

In my north Miami area -yard, m-4 does the best so far but it’s too young to evaluate really(4 years old )
Sugarloaf barely produces but a couple fruits a year so far (it’s 7 years old).

PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHICH YOU THINK IS BEST “COCONUT”
MANGO TREE AND WHY. PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR LOCATION FOR CLIMATE COMPARISONS.

thank you

-Abie

I won’t let sugarloaf Jack the thread but I will say the taste is superb even with uneven ripening. The less ripe parts are pineapple and the more ripe flesh is coconut. It’s pretty incredible. For me it’s worth holding onto but I have space for other mango trees that are workhorses with production. I will be adding DOT this year for sure if I get my hands on a nice one.

Disease issues this year with solid rain on second, larger bloom on most of my trees.

Pickering was the exception as it bloomed fully with cool dry weather. M-4 also had no disease issues.

Pickering- very healthy looking, very good fruit set. Grape sized at the moment. 2 inch chunk

M-4 - very healthy looking only three panicles flowered but there are 6 fruits on the tree golf ball size almost. 3 inch trunk

Sugarloaf - full bloom, very poor looking fruit set I’ll be surprised if I get a fruit or two on a 5 year old, 9 foot tree. Trunk is about 5 inches

Baileys marvel, two blooms almost full between the two blooms and very poor fruitset maybe a dozen  holding at golfball size tree is 13x12 or so. Trunk is 11 inches or so .

Pineapple pleasure : chose leaves instead of fruit
3.5 inch trunk

Cecilove chose leaves. Too small too evaluate.

Another year with full bloom from sugarloaf and very very poor fruit set:

Im sticking with it though it’s just too excellent to give up on…for a few more years atleast haha.

Juno
I recently asked mango -master Alex Salazar a similar question(blooms looked the same brown and dying or dead…) he said it was a combination of thrips and powdery mildew.

Not sure If that’s the same thing but I’ve seen that a lot this year in a few cultivars that I grow in Miami and that my buddy grows in Deerfield.

Diseases are getting more widespread here from what I’ve seen.

My Pickering, M4 and sugarloaf are clean, SO FAR. But everything else is infected with something.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Baileys marvel disease resistance
« on: March 22, 2024, 01:08:25 PM »
Hi y’all

Have had a baileys marvel tree planted here in my Miami home since 2019. This year has a ton of disease issues and powdery mildew so bad that I’m not sure I’ll get much fruitset at all.

Does anyone have experience with baileys marvel in Miami area?
In regard to disease resistance over the course of years…

Thanks

-Abe

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Sugarloaf/E-4 Mango seedling For trade
« on: January 02, 2024, 07:45:38 PM »
I have a beautiful seedling of my own Sugarloaf/E4 mango that I planted myself last august. It’s in a 1 gallon pot I guess, maybe it’s a 3 gallon but either way the tree is good sized and ready to be replanted.

I want to trade it for some black sapote fruit or  local grown fruit in Miami, Fl area. Please let me know what you have

 thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / “Orange Cherimoya”
« on: December 28, 2023, 10:03:47 PM »
Hey y’all.
A friend with a large grove gave me an “orange cherimoya” recently.

He told me it was from a Caribbean islander and that person told him the do well in The windward islands and sometimes Jamaica.

I planted it in my north Miami area yard last spring and it’s doing well although growing slowly.

Does anyone have any information on the “orange cherimoya “?

Thank you

Abe

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: NDM flowering

The madame Francis trees usually bloom in December here in north Miami. Some of them have fruit in them already (I don’t like the fruit, too fibrous for me but it’s notable how they bloom with ease year after year in early or late December…)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lemon Drop Mangosteen size?
« on: September 10, 2023, 12:02:24 AM »
Abe I am interested to hear how large and how old your lemon drop tree is.  I have some of these growing and I wonder how long until they will flower.

The fruit looks very nice, at that size do you eat the whole thing?  Peel it?  Squeeze for juice?

The tree is about 4.5 Ft tall now atleast 3 ft wide at most points top to bottom. I planted it in ground 2018 but was given to me by my buddy as 6 inch tall potted seedling in 2017. I just peel them, pop them in my mouth and suck off the flesh and spit out seed, as the seed is probably 65 or 70 percent of the fruit without skin.

My achacha is just as old but bigger and no flowers yet. Lemon drop continues to flower non stop.

Thanks to all y’all for the help.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lemon Drop Mangosteen size?
« on: September 09, 2023, 03:54:09 PM »
Hello TFF friends,

My Lemon Drop has been fruiting for about 6 months and they are nice flavored, sweet and sour.

However, I’ve heard that most lemon drop fruits are like apricot/plum size and mine are all maxed out at grape size.

Is a grape-size lemon drop fruit normal and just  a different seedling? Or is it abnormal? Any help is appreciated thanks.
