What Trees to Plant in Permanently Soggy Soil?
« on: May 06, 2022, 11:02:56 AM »
A few areas on our lower slopes here are pretty much waterlogged year-round. Even if the surface appears relatively dry, a couple inches below it is basically waterlogged. Assume acidic, leached soil. We're looking to plant trees that can tolerate being wet all the time or at least most of the year. Please recommend something that you think is readily available in Peru. Fast-growing is big plus. So far, the only trees I can think of are Aguaje (Mauritia flexuosa) and (Huasai) Euterpe precatoria. Those aren't very fast.

How about Araca (Eugenia stipitata, feijoi)?

It doesn't have to be a fruit tree either. If there is a good timber species I'm open to that as well.

Camu-Camu would be a good local option-

Digi beat me to the punch with Pond apple which is pretty good for grafting stock for other Annona

Pandanus spp.

Muntingia I think

Wouldn't most Inga be able to handle those conditions?

Really? Those grow well in swampy locations? We planted 74 Syzygium malaccense throughout the property, but off the top of my head, I can't recall any that are doing well in the swampy areas.

they love humidity and heavy rain but i guess waterlogging is a different beast...in that case very few will do.

The technical term is hydromorphic soil. Maybe this word is indexed in some tropical fruit publications?

One thing to keep in mind about Peru, is that if it is a species that is not already common in Peru, it can be very difficult to track down something exotic.

I at least have a couple options to plant.

Camu camu was suggested, which we planted originally. Seems to do OK. However, I'm mostly interested in trees that will grow at least 20 feet tall.

You took the words right out of my mouth--acai palm. Fruit, vegetable, timber all in one tree. Pachira aquatica was also a great recommendation. It grows in the same swamps as pond apple in Mexico. I'm not sure if they have bald cypress in Peru, but it would love that kind of environment as well.

I think nauclea xanthoxylon likes it super wet. Or nauclea latifolia, one of the two.
