My fellow Mango Maniacs. Lend me your ears.

I’ve been following the “coconut mango collection” cultivars from Gary Zill for quite some time. I’ve been trying to evaluate peoples opinions and experiences since about 2017. That makes me still very new to this.

Of the mango cultivars people would claim to have “coconut” flavor i want to hear everyone’s experiences with them please. If I don’t mention one please add it to the list. I would love to know about:

Disease resistance
Ease of blooming
Production
Flavor

I’m a huge fan of most mangos that have coconut flavor. Excluding one which I won’t mention for fear or bias.

Of the “coconut mangos”, In my yard I grow

Sugarloaf
M-4
 


but of-course there is also

Pina colada
Coconut cream
And maybe more im forgetting


In my north Miami area -yard, m-4 does the best so far but it’s too young to evaluate really(4 years old )
Sugarloaf barely produces but a couple fruits a year so far (it’s 7 years old).

MANGO TREE AND WHY. PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR LOCATION FOR CLIMATE COMPARISONS.

I have a beautiful seedling of my own Sugarloaf/E4 mango that I planted myself last august. It’s in a 1 gallon pot I guess, maybe it’s a 3 gallon but either way the tree is good sized and ready to be replanted.

I want to trade it for some black sapote fruit or  local grown fruit in Miami, Fl area. Please let me know what you have

Hello TFF friends,

My Lemon Drop has been fruiting for about 6 months and they are nice flavored, sweet and sour.

However, I’ve heard that most lemon drop fruits are like apricot/plum size and mine are all maxed out at grape size.

Is a grape-size lemon drop fruit normal and just  a different seedling? Or is it abnormal? Any help is appreciated thanks.

Tree was gifted to me by my buddy and forum member acoff88 in 2017.
Was potted until 1 year ago.

I was shocked and stoked to see Lots of flowers this morning.

Anyone else growing garcinia intermedia in Miami area or in south Florida that can tell me how long flower to fruit and if I need to bag them or if critters and pests leave them alone usually??

Hey mango veterans
I have a 15 gallon Pickering but it has a  2 inch trunk girth and nice little canopy. It’s starting to push flower panicles Out now. I know most trees that size I remove small pea-sized fruits from, and let canopy grow…BUT as a true dwarf tree, is it reasonable to let the tree hold fruit even at 3-4 ft high with a 2 inch trunk girth and still have good foliar flushes post harvest?

At the very top of my favorite tasting mangos sits the Pineapple Pleasure, tied with Sugarloaf.
Needless to say I grow both varieties in my northeast Miami yard. My PP tree is too small to expect to hold a crop of fruit this year. My sugarloaf is plenty big. Back to topic:
 

After quite a few years of the PP trees  in production now, I’d love to know everyone’s experience with producing their’ own pineapple pleasure fruit in their’ yard.

South Florida experience would be great but would also
Be interested to know results from all over the globe to eliminate bias.

I have read and and heard people say that you can keep your mango trees under 12 ft forever…AND expect good production. I understand that a 12x12 ft mango tree is a good size tree, but Will the tree eventually be hurt by continued pruning to keep that small? I have an aggressive Baileys Marvel I have at just over 9x9  ft and it’s holding about 30-40 mangoes, but tree is still young. is this something you can continue to do successfully forever? It seems tough atleast with my baileys.

I have 5 other mango trees in ground as well and I need to make a pruning decision before they get out of hand. Not sure If the fast growing cultivars can be managed like this or not…WITH good consistent production…

Pitangatuba fruit-set, I suck at it.

My pitangatuba is in a 25 gallon pot for a couple years now.
It flowers almost constantly for a year now with every heavy rain it seems,  but it will not hold fruit.


I don’t water it, almost ever.
it is in my Miami yard and out in the open where it gets alot of rainfall.
It’s in full sun almost all day.

I haven't fertilized it at all in over a year.

I’m scared to change anything because of the flowering but I need FRUIT not flowers!


Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I’ve got a 15 month old baby boy, he’s the light of my life. I’m obsessed with him, And mangoes, so naturally I wanted him to like mangos. His first mango try was Haden because it was most convenient in my neighbors yard, but it’s got just enough fiber to be hazardous and he would choke. I stopped immediately and continued my a search.

So far I found “Glenn” is perfect. A very ripe Glenn is like a mango jello and he loves it. It melts in his little Mouth and even big chunks melt away safely and enjoyably.

He also loves ripe “Irwin” and it seems safe.

“Kathy” and “Karen Michelle” he loves and they were safe too.

“Lemon Zest” was his definite favorite and nice and soft and melting for his 8-tooth mouth too.

Just figured If there are any new dads or moms on here this might be Helpful.

Please add any mango cultivars that are soft, sweet and completely fiberless for rugrats.

This one is my tree.  I got in 2019 planted in ground august 2019. Every branch has a panicle in bloom. Lucky!

I had some great Jamaican gentlemen on my boat today. They told me of this fruit that’s prolific on their mountain property in Jamaica. They enjoy it very much. Will it grow at sea level in the south Florida climate? Anyone try it? If so, please share growing info.

I would love to hear some experiences on this one. Tasted a few this year and loved the classic mango sweetness with very fiber. Is this typical? Is the tree a heavy producer? Disease resistant? Thank you in advance.
