My fellow Mango Maniacs. Lend me your ears.

I’ve been following the “coconut mango collection” cultivars from Gary Zill for quite some time. I’ve been trying to evaluate peoples opinions and experiences since about 2017. That makes me still very new to this.

Of the mango cultivars people would claim to have “coconut” flavor i want to hear everyone’s experiences with them please. If I don’t mention one please add it to the list. I would love to know about:

Disease resistance
Ease of blooming
Production
Flavor

I’m a huge fan of most mangos that have coconut flavor. Excluding one which I won’t mention for fear or bias.

Of the “coconut mangos”, In my yard I grow

Sugarloaf
M-4

but of-course there is also

Pina colada
Coconut cream
And maybe more im forgetting

In my north Miami area -yard, m-4 does the best so far but it’s too young to evaluate really(4 years old )
Sugarloaf barely produces but a couple fruits a year so far (it’s 7 years old).

PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHICH YOU THINK IS BEST “COCONUT”
MANGO TREE AND WHY. PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR LOCATION FOR CLIMATE COMPARISONS.

thank you

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Baileys marvel disease resistance
« on: March 22, 2024, 01:08:25 PM »
Hi y’all

Have had a baileys marvel tree planted here in my Miami home since 2019. This year has a ton of disease issues and powdery mildew so bad that I’m not sure I’ll get much fruitset at all.

Does anyone have experience with baileys marvel in Miami area?
In regard to disease resistance over the course of years…

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / “Orange Cherimoya”
« on: December 28, 2023, 10:03:47 PM »
Hey y’all.
A friend with a large grove gave me an “orange cherimoya” recently.

He told me it was from a Caribbean islander and that person told him the do well in The windward islands and sometimes Jamaica.

I planted it in my north Miami area yard last spring and it’s doing well although growing slowly.

Does anyone have any information on the “orange cherimoya “?

Thank you

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lemon Drop Mangosteen size?
« on: September 09, 2023, 03:54:09 PM »
Hello TFF friends,

My Lemon Drop has been fruiting for about 6 months and they are nice flavored, sweet and sour.

However, I’ve heard that most lemon drop fruits are like apricot/plum size and mine are all maxed out at grape size.

Is a grape-size lemon drop fruit normal and just  a different seedling? Or is it abnormal? Any help is appreciated thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sugarloaf seedling thread
« on: March 06, 2023, 09:32:16 AM »
Hey y’all

So sugarloaf/Zill e-4 is my favorite mango. I have a 4/5 yr old tree planted in the ground in my yard and it’s fruiting with pea-size fruits. It’s fruited the last 2 years also but none reached maturity before dropping. This year hopefully better results but it always has full bloom and it always has a poor fruit-set due to vast majority of flowers being male.

That all being said, I planted a couple
Sugarloaf seeds from fruits a purchased from Alex last year and one of them is now healthy and about 2 ft tall.

I’m hoping its polyembryonic reputation holds true as I plan to grow it out to fruiting age. I’m
Doing it to see if the seedling has better luck with flower ratio and maybe it’s even precocious as a seedling? Just very interested to see if the seedling is any different.

Has anyone tried growing one from seed yet?

Thanks

Tree was gifted to me by my buddy and forum member acoff88 in 2017.
Was potted until 1 year ago.

I was shocked and stoked to see Lots of flowers this morning.

Anyone else growing garcinia intermedia in Miami area or in south Florida that can tell me how long flower to fruit and if I need to bag them or if critters and pests leave them alone usually??

Thanks

Abe

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango blooms: spray or nay?
« on: January 24, 2023, 09:12:47 AM »
3 of my mango trees have the majority of their’ canopy pushing buds in my Biscayne Park yard. Hopefully most mango growers in south Florida have blooms starting too.

Please share your spray regiments and experience with spraying emerging panicles vs. not spraying.

One of the many mango things that confounds me is WHEN to spray.
I’ve heard you can sterilize flowers if you spray while open?

I’ve also heard some mango growers never spray during bloom at all, if you are one of these people please share your experience.

Would love to hear all failures and successes.

Weiss from this forum has given me some advice and I’d love to hear some more.

Thank you kindly

-Abe

Hey mango veterans
I have a 15 gallon Pickering but it has a  2 inch trunk girth and nice little canopy. It’s starting to push flower panicles Out now. I know most trees that size I remove small pea-sized fruits from, and let canopy grow…BUT as a true dwarf tree, is it reasonable to let the tree hold fruit even at 3-4 ft high with a 2 inch trunk girth and still have good foliar flushes post harvest?

Thank you

Ive got a decent mango tree collection now but would like to add a few more trees.

Just curious if planting mango trees too close to septic tank or drain field could burn the tree or ruin my septic system.

Im aware that mango trees have long taproots but I’m not educated on their’ root systems well enough to answer this one.

How close is too close?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pineapple Pleasure Productivity
« on: December 12, 2022, 11:16:41 AM »
At the very top of my favorite tasting mangos sits the Pineapple Pleasure, tied with Sugarloaf.
Needless to say I grow both varieties in my northeast Miami yard. My PP tree is too small to expect to hold a crop of fruit this year. My sugarloaf is plenty big. Back to topic:

After quite a few years of the PP trees  in production now, I’d love to know everyone’s experience with producing their’ own pineapple pleasure fruit in their’ yard.

South Florida experience would be great but would also
Be interested to know results from all over the globe to eliminate bias.

Thank you so much.

I have read and and heard people say that you can keep your mango trees under 12 ft forever…AND expect good production. I understand that a 12x12 ft mango tree is a good size tree, but Will the tree eventually be hurt by continued pruning to keep that small? I have an aggressive Baileys Marvel I have at just over 9x9  ft and it’s holding about 30-40 mangoes, but tree is still young. is this something you can continue to do successfully forever? It seems tough atleast with my baileys.

I have 5 other mango trees in ground as well and I need to make a pruning decision before they get out of hand. Not sure If the fast growing cultivars can be managed like this or not…WITH good consistent production…

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pitangatuba hand-pollination
« on: April 03, 2022, 08:12:13 PM »
Hi amigos and amigas…

My buddy and member Acoff88 gave me a small seedling pitangatuba in 2017. It began flowering in 2020. It hasn’t stopped flowering. It has not fruited once.

He told me to try hand pollination…

Has anyone experienced this issue in south Florida? Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pitangatuba Fruitset Failure
« on: October 31, 2021, 11:07:48 PM »
Pitangatuba fruit-set, I suck at it.

My pitangatuba is in a 25 gallon pot for a couple years now.
It flowers almost constantly for a year now with every heavy rain it seems,  but it will not hold fruit.

I don’t water it, almost ever.
it is in my Miami yard and out in the open where it gets alot of rainfall.
It’s in full sun almost all day.

I haven't fertilized it at all in over a year.

I’m scared to change anything because of the flowering but I need FRUIT not flowers!

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

-Abie

So I had a nursery owner tell me that “Lancetilla” mango trees were dwarf/condo size trees years ago…
They are most certainly not.
My neighbors Lancetilla Tree:

I might add that they are pretty good. Nice coconut tones with classic flavor and no fiber to speak of.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Baby-friendly Mango fruits.
« on: June 21, 2021, 06:05:19 PM »
I’ve got a 15 month old baby boy, he’s the light of my life. I’m obsessed with him, And mangoes, so naturally I wanted him to like mangos. His first mango try was Haden because it was most convenient in my neighbors yard, but it’s got just enough fiber to be hazardous and he would choke. I stopped immediately and continued my a search.

So far I found “Glenn” is perfect. A very ripe Glenn is like a mango jello and he loves it. It melts in his little Mouth and even big chunks melt away safely and enjoyably.

He also loves ripe “Irwin” and it seems safe.

“Kathy” and “Karen Michelle” he loves and they were safe too.

“Lemon Zest” was his definite favorite and nice and soft and melting for his 8-tooth mouth too.

Just figured If there are any new dads or moms on here this might be Helpful.

Please add any mango cultivars that are soft, sweet and completely fiberless for rugrats.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sugarloaf or Pineapple Pleasure
« on: June 14, 2021, 10:10:29 PM »
That is the question..

They are hands down my two favorite mangos by a long shot.

Does Pineapple Pleasure produce well?
Disease resistant?

My sugarloaf already flowered and fruited in 2 years in ground, but that’s not enough time to tell me much. The Fruits dropped and the male flowers were terribly dominant, but hoping for next Year success.

BETWEEN THE TWO, WHICH ONE WOULD YOU PLANT?

I want opinions and pros and cons if anyone has grown either or both.
Thank you

-Abe

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Productivity of the NDM Mango Tree
« on: February 07, 2021, 02:50:32 PM »
Hi fellow Mango-obsessors,
Please share your experiences with the productivity of your NDM trees. I have a 3 year old grafted NDM, the non-dwarf variety. Maybe it’s called “sia tong”.. everything I have in ground is in full bloom, except my 6.5x4 ft NDM. Are they usually later to start producing? Are they very productive early, or when more mature? I’m in the Miami, Fl area. Thanks so much

I had some great Jamaican gentlemen on my boat today. They told me of this fruit that’s prolific on their mountain property in Jamaica. They enjoy it very much. Will it grow at sea level in the south Florida climate? Anyone try it? If so, please share growing info.

Thank you

-Abe

Out of pure curiosity, has anyone tried growing mangos in anything other than soil mix? Maybe sawdust, cypress mulch? If you must know why I ask...because I’ve always been curious.

25
Hi all mango maniacs,
I would love to hear some experiences on this one. Tasted a few this year and loved the classic mango sweetness with very fiber. Is this typical? Is the tree a heavy producer? Disease resistant? Thank you in advance.
