Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Brazilian Red Pineapple
« on: March 26, 2024, 05:00:46 PM »
Hi fellow growers.

I have some extra Brazilian Red Pineapple slips for sale.

This would be ananas bracteatus.  The fruits are red skinned and have a light, but sweet flavor when ripe. The specialty produce companies like Miami Fruit and Melissa’s sell these fairly successfully when in season.

I grow them both for fruit and as a decorative plant. I know some growers that like them for a security hedge, as they are prickly and grow up 3’ high.  https://miamifruit.org/products/brazilian-red-pineapple-plant. Link leads to some extra info. Pictures attached.

I ship these dry root and clipped down a little to keep postage reasonable.  I have a limited number - $10 each. Buyer pays shipping. I will quote total after scaling at P.O. for those interested.

Thanks
Brett

Some snapshots of pineapple flowering from the Pineapple Ranch just in case anyone would be curious.  A mild, but fairly soggy, Central Florida winter left the pineapple in good shape this year.  A few bolts, but most plants flowered in the beginning of March.  No forcing necessary.  The usual plants continue to struggle a bit.  Josephine, Manzana, Japanese Peach:  Delicate plants that are having a tougher time adjusting.  The rest seem to be thriving.  Philippine Red, Mauritius, Queen Victoria, and an interesting African 'Sugarloaf' from Benin arriving soon.

Wishing everyone a quiet weather season for 2024.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Queen Natal Pineapple Slips - Ltd Qty
« on: February 14, 2024, 08:54:00 PM »
Hi Everyone -
I have a limited amount of slips available for Queen Natal Pineapple. This plant is a direct descendant of USDA plantlets received a few years ago.  Like most queens, these plants can be slip prolific - but unlike some other queens, these produce large, VERY SWEET fruit - consistently.  Large for queen, that is.  Thorny but worth the frustration IMO. Also tolerant of chilly weather. Attractive burgundy color leaves if put in full sun.  Top pictures are plants w fruit in winter and lower pics are the plants showing their leaf color in summer.

First come, first served. Limited qty, largest slips go first. If interested, pls msg me to confirm I still have qty you need.
$20 per slip, buyer pays shipping, which I will quote once pkg is scaled.

Thank you -
Brett

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Las Marias Pineapple
« on: December 03, 2023, 11:07:21 AM »
A while back I was asked to share an example of the fruit from a Las Marias pineapple. This is a fruit found exclusively on Puerto Rico that’s apparently an accidental or deliberate cross between a cabezona and smooth cayenne or MD2 pineapple. Large and globe-shaped when given a big pot or put in ground, this is an aromatic, thorny variety produces a very sweet fruit with light vanilla flavor.  Dark green to burgundy leaves. Robust grower with usually 3-4 pups and 3 slips. Puerto Rico had two primary farmed pineapple before the mass shift to MD2: Cayennealisa (from Florida, PR) and Cabezona. My last trip to Lajas yielded only MD2 samples.  Other pineapple are tough finds … sometimes they show up in season at (late June/July) farmers markets and small farms. PR also has a wild Arawak pineapple called Rascana thats worth checking out (thx Bryan at MontosoGardens)👍

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mealy Bugs and Fire Ants
« on: August 29, 2023, 09:44:58 PM »
Interesting - today I noticed Mealy bugs being herded by fire ants. I’ve read about this phenom, but have never seen it happen (the ants get a reward for protection with a honeydew the Mealy bugs produce). When I opened the pineapple plants leaves, the fire ants took notice and rushed to pick up the Mealy bugs and move them out of sight. Fascinating.  Anybody else run into this?

Sold Out of Pineapple Slips, thank you everyone

Fellow TFF Growers, I have a few slips to sell if you're interested.  First come, first served.  PLEASE msg or email me w/ what you'd like to make sure I have what you want.  I'll try my best to describe the different cultivars and my experience growing them - everyone has different growing conditions and habits, but I'll try and offer some characteristics.  Cost is $20 per slip - buyer pays for postage which I can quote if you send your address w/ what you'd like.  Most orders go out in a padded envelope which has worked well and keeps postage reasonable.  If you need a specific carrier - please advise (Some folks do not care for USPS service carrying delicate plant material.  I get it, and can work to accommodate).

Cheesepine - Good sized plants with Excellent flavor.  Very hardy.  Spiked variety.  Few slips, but will produce pups under fruits.  Clip them early for larger fruit or leave them attached for additional plants.  Loves fertilizer, few pests... even nematodes go easy on these.  I have 8 good sized pups.

Las Marias - A beautiful pineapple from the West Side of Puerto Rico up in the high country above Lajas.  Large globe fruit that matures to caramel brown to orange.  The larger the pot, the bigger the fruit and these plants can push big fruit.  Very tasty, very sweet. Spiked variety. Few slips.  Produces in places where others struggle - with part sun and a lot of rain I still managed to get great results.  I have 4 pups.

Antigua Black - An iconic pineapple that is surprisingly hard to find.  Grows (supposedly) the sweetest pineapple at 17-18 brix.  These samples came from a plant I sourced from the famous Clemmies Fruit Stand at Cades Bay, Antigua.  Prefers lots of sun and dry conditions.  Spiked variety that produces both slips and pups if fertilized frequently.  The more you fert, the more offspring.  Conversely, lower fert actually produces a larger fruit.  Sounds counterintuitive.  Not as robust to cold and rough handling as some of the other spiked varieties, so should be grown in an area protected from high wind.  Fruit quality is very good.  Flower and fruit are beautiful.  Fruit starts out blackberry colored and turns dark orange when it is ripe.  Narrow barreled fruit.
I have 2 pups.

Nanas Pada (or Sawit). A pineapple from the North side of Borneo in Malaysia.  Has delicious fruit - some compare it to a very large Queen (if Queen were to get that large). Tolerant of high wind and a cold snap.  Robust, stout plants with spikes.
Can produce both slips and pups (it varies by location and plant apparently) - and large fruits can be grown if the grower keeps the slips and pups clipped.  Another variety that will push big fruit if you grow it in the ground or in a large pot.  It's root stock holds firm when other plants tend to lose their grip if the medium gets soggy - which is a positive trait this year in Florida.  A keeper in my book.  I have 7 slips.

Dellerman Gold - A pineapple that is getting more and more attention as people find out about it.  Sold traditionally at a roadside stand one or two weekends a year - the fruit is now becoming more sought after by people driving down to FL from upstate and GA.  The best hybrid fruit has a strong hint of coconut and/or vanilla.  Complex fruit flavor that is absolutely unique and world class.  I have 18 plants that were chosen from hundreds of taste-tasted fruit to provide the strongest genetics.  The slips I offer are from strong flavored fruit stock.  For a video that shines some light on the local grower and his fruit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4J_kix8Lsms.  Loves fertilizer - will handle a cold snap well, but obviously pull the plant indoors if there's a frost advertised.  Cold will cause this plant to bolt (or produce an off-timed, early flower) leading to smaller fruit size.  Still delicious results regardless. Once the plant produces a flower, the time to fruit maturity is relatively quick, compared to many of the other cultivars - typical of MD 1 and MD2.   I have 12 slips.

Thanks everyone.

Just a note for those who love great tasting pineapple, that Frank Dellerman has his fruit for sale in Sebastian and Vero Beach.  These are the pine that have a vanilla/coconut taste.  Available for those in the East Central Florida Coast area. He runs out quickly though.

Happy 4th everyone.

I promised some growers I would check in on how the Japanese peach pineapple crowns have taken. Out of the four, all survived. Even though the grower cropped the crowns, new growth is popping up.
Next to the Gold Barrel pineapple, I think these are possibly the most interesting tasting pineapple you can find, and so far, well worth the expense of finding and importing.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Planning a trip to OKINAWA in June -

Any growers there that might suggest farmers markets - fruit markets?

Thanks

It's almost November and we made it through the wet season.

We here in East Central Florida were fortunate enough to have Hurricane Ian's worst rain go to our north, but we had weeks of heavy rain before the event.  So it was soggy-root season and the plants started to show the warning signs of pythium root rot.  One of the countermeasures I took earlier this summer was to dig 6" below the pots and place crushed stone to assist in drainage.  Soil was also amended with plenty of pebble and perlite to aid in drainage.  Leaf 'white spot' at this point is on the decline... so good signs.  As usual practice, going forward until spring... the foliar feeding gets cut back by half.  And the mild fungicide (Captan) inoculation is complete as well.  Looking forward to dormant season and then the increase in basil ratoons/slips and flowering.  I just hope we can get through winter without a freeze warning.  Frost is shelter in place with blankets and, ...if required, ...Christmas lights under the blankets to keep the plants warm.  But a freeze warrants all 50 pots going into shelter, which is a back-breaker.  The good news is we're close enough to the Atlantic that cold fronts aren't normally very intense. LOL just jinxed myself.

Here are some shots from the collection as last year's slips are maturing and new items are in the ground and thriving.  Exeption: Manzana, which has had some trouble getting from tissue culture plantlet to first year plant.  Suspect: Phytophthora.  The 2 plants are in the infirmary (j/k) ... out of the direct sunlight and sheltered... and improving after pest and fungus treatments.  I caught it early.

Sarawak is inbound and will hopefully be in the collection shortly.

Cheers all,
Brett

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Giant Paun Pineapple - Pics

The first pick of the season. Giant Paun.

Tip of the hat to Brad Spaugh - thanks again.

I thought I'd upload some images of the garden as it stands.  2 strong cold fronts and an unusually wet winter and all plants including the small starters (Cabazona, Monte Lirio, Pernambuco) from USDA have survived.  No casualties, but some of the larger plants had some crushed leaves due to the tarps that had to be deployed on the nights where frost was imminent.  This winter also spawned some disease and mold - so all plants received a light dose of Captan. 2 or 3 lost some root mass due to wet feet.  I'm pleased by the number of fruiting plants.  The images in order I tried to upload:  Pineapple sign from trip to Puerto Rico Pineapple Express/Lajas) to study commercial growing, Red Spanish pups, Sawit, Smooth Cayenne, Abacaxi, Dellerman Gold, Queen Natal pups, Maisie Wonder Cat, Queen Natal 1, Queen Natal 2, Abacaxi, Antigua Black (USDA recipient 8 months), Cayenalisa (Florida, Puerto Rico at 6 months), MD2, MD2, Josepine, Cheesepine, Cayenne Hilo, Cheesepine, MD2, MD2, Red Spanish pups, Smooth Cayenne, Sawit Slips, Dellerman Gold (Sebastian, FL), Brazilian Red, Brazilian Red, Kuai White Sugaloaf (Hole in the Mountain Farm).
