« on: April 06, 2024, 09:18:10 PM »Agree with Nate here that Jonah's tree is the best guabiju, but also of note, the leaves on his tree are wavy and that's unusual. I top worked my seedling guabiju with his scions and they took great with cleft grafts, 100% take rate.
Rad, I'm gonna graft and plant a bunch of trees this year!

Just confirmed with them that their Babaco is indeed Vasconcellea pubescens, Mountain Papaya. Asked them to change their listing, we'll see if that happens.

They also list Babaco Papaya but have Vasconcellea pubescens as the photo. I've asked them about this and that their plants look like seedling V. pubescens. They said they are tissue cultured Babaco. Has anyone heard of Babaco being TC'd and distributed by anyone? Always wondered.

Just dug up some seedlings to transplant them to a wider spacing. I had about 10 seedlings i planted at 6' apart, lost 3 but the 7 have been growing incredibly fast. After seeing people talk about them being huge i wanted to make my spacing more in line with the rest of my yangmei block, about 10' spacing. Not very many roots in the top 6-8" of soil and lots of large roots with fibrous roots coming straight down off the bottom of the plant. We'll see how they recover. Plants are about 2.5-3' tall. Was fun to do in terms of learning what their roots are like. Very little gopher activity around these lower roots.

Hey Kevin, have you tried various different seedlings? I have about 10 and have found one to be somewhat sweeter and less tart, but not sure how sweet, sweet really is. Is yours tart at all? Thank you!

I've been wanting to grow more from this genus. A super interesting member of the Melastomataceae family! They look beautiful and super delicious. I've grown seedlings but always seem to get them germinated and can never keep them alive. I bought some seedlings from bellamy and they have been doing great. Probably a bout 8-10" tall. Just moved em out of my grow room and into a hoop house from 4" to 1gallon. Hopefully these do well for me!

I bought a box of those ones I posted and got em in an Aglis Box. I prefer non-perforated honestly, especially when its almost 50% more for perforated. Dang!

Haha glad they eventually made it to you! They definitely seem to last longer bagged up when they are wrapped, seems they are quite prone to desiccation.
Hope they take and hopefully I'll have some scions of the Chinese varieties sometime in the next couple years. Hoping this is the year my plants really take off after getting established.

I can't speak to that, I think the take rates would be very low. Maybe Matthias Thomas has rooted them? I know its not commonly done

These are scions from plants I got from Far Reaches Farm, they are about 4 or 5 years old! Glad to hear the plants are growing well! Mine from that batch are about 2.5' and super bushy. They've definitely been outperforming all my other Yangmei plants

I remember people testing other ‘rootstocks’ but don’t think I ever found out if any were compatibleThey can be grafted onto a number of Myrica species with some species having better take rates supposedly. I think a lot of people are using Myrica cerifera but I have been grafting all of mine onto Myrica californica. I am in M. californica's native range and have some big trees on my farm that have grown in the past ~50 years. I'm gonna try Myrica cerifera sometime soon though.

Just trimmed up my Yangmei plants today and have a bunch of really great looking scion. Lots of swollen buds and some that are starting to break.
Varieties available:
Female (Tested by Marta @ Really Good Plants)
Male (Tested by Marta @ Really Good Plants)
Untested Seedling (Not tested, unsure of gender)
Myrica esculenta (Not tested, unsure of gender)
Diameter is a little smaller than a pencil to almost size of sharpie, fewer thicker ones
Cost is $10 per scion, Minimum order of 4 scions, shipping is 10$
All orders will come with extras

Thats the impression im getting too, with the boosting in cold weather and being stressed in the hottest times of the year. I sold some to a guy who lives in the redwoods, an old clear cut that is second growth forest, and he has very rich soil. The plants are doing pretty amazing for him and he has multiple seedlings flowering. I think he'll probably be one of the first to fruit it in California. Seems like they enjoy the low intensity light up at his spot. Wish I had more of that around my area.
