They have it,
but it's under patent and is only being sold in HI.
I'd estimate several more years until they start selling it to people from mainland.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Yangmei on Sale ---> WEEE

Ah, well.  Maybe I'll visit CA or China during yangmei season some year.

I paid a fortune for a box of fresh maprang fruits once, and they were actually amazing and renewed my interest in trying to grow it.  But if yangmei can't survive shipping then there's no point.
They shipped pretty well for me last year.
I would go ahead and give it a try.
No squish fruits, no mold, no nonsense, all fruits were good🙂
You just need to find someone willing to from Cali👍

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango sap reaction
« on: June 16, 2025, 11:59:34 AM »
Last year when I visited Xain,
He picked me a mango, right off the tree and it spit sap all over my arm.
I thought I’d be fine, but I broke out. Next time I either wear long sleeves or wash my arm off asap.
What helped was washing it really well, using dish soap and cleaner with grit.

Hope you get better soon,
Sounds like yours is pretty bad.

Eugenia florida from Bellamy.

If you were in SWFL 10a would you put these in ground, and if so, in full sun or part sun? Or pot them up until they are larger?

Thanks!
You could go either way. Should do well in part sun, you could always dedicate full sun to something bigger if you like.
Florida is supposed to be a good Eugenia,
Miguel has a nice selected variety of it which I hear is top tier.

Excellent reviews thanks. I’m wondering today I grabbed my first Mamey from a Mercado that has had several pretty amazing fruits from South America. This is the first time I saw them here so I grabbed one for $13. It’s pretty hard do I want it to soften up a little before trying to cut it open? Do they keep sweetening up?
Here’s the fruit sorry about the bad lighting.

They don’t keep sweetening up…if picked unripe, it won’t hit peak.
So when picking off the tree, you need to scratch the fruit to see orange underneath. It’ll still be hard, but at that time, you know it’s ready to go.
You need to wait until the fruit gets soft before eating it.

Every single seed I bought germinated.

Mangosteen farms in Mexico would be more south towards the tropical rainy side, away from the California side I would assume. Needs temps that are warm and humid.

Also, I am not sure that the grafted mangosteen you are talking about is a true mangosteen, I assume it’s one of the relatives. SD gets too cold for them to grow there and would need supplemental heat
Do you have any pictures? Is it a pretty big tree?

Thanks fir the fruits!
Took a while as I got back from vacation
But they still taste great.
I definitely don’t want to sleep on this species!

Was just a Frankie’s a few days ago,
No they aren’t selling any fruits of it for now
And also, they don’t sell to mainlanders
Right now they only sell to residents

But don’t fret, I am sure they’ll open up sales to mainlanders in a few years

Funny thing is someone said Helton himself recommended this one☠️
Idk guys, we cooked at this point with eugenias it seems

In Florida you can get those for about $450 if you know where to look. A solidly grown fully filled out 25 gallon plant
But I know SoCal is expensive

Wait that pot is not a true 25 gallon nursery pot
Ok yeah idk tough question
I wouldn’t pay over $400 for that even in SoCal…also I wouldn’t even buy it so yeah
And I’d go by caliper as an indicator of price more than size
That trunk is skinny

Not a bad Eugenia to grow!
No astringency, and taste was pretty good.
Now keep in mind there are different selections out there
Some are more underwhelming and others are actually quite good.

By dwarf mango, they just mean slower growing
I’ve seen big Pickering in FL like 25ft tall and 20 ft wide at least
I guess long run it’s more manageable and forgiving if you forget to prune

The red jabo you got looks like sabara
I’ve never seen people saying dwarf red hmmm….
Any soil that’s slightly acidic and well draining is good.

How did you ‘like’ them ?  ;D
They good lol
Not better than a mango, or durian, or northern cherry, or watermelon, etc
But it’s a solid fruit that has a cool taste that’s sweet with some berry undertones and that “sandlewood” taste that Simon describes which makes them unique
Also they were from weeee so not fresh of the tree which may lead me to rank them slightly lower than they may be worth
I think it’s a cool fruit worth growing!
And it’s nice that they can make ample amounts of fruit in a pot
I would equate it to about a jaboticaba in terms of ranking on the fruit list
So probably in my top 25-50 fruits

They ripen in California around July or mid-late June I believe?
I think it’s only on weeee if your area code is in Cali, I had to get a friend to ship them over to me.

Sounds cool!
I’d like to stop by the first week of July if possible.

Yep we got our record rainfall broken here with over 12 inches of rain in may
Not really happy with that! I would’ve been ok with 10

22
I’m potentially down, will be in the area later this summer
Like late July/early August
If no one trades before then

Every seller coming out of Aguada PR is a scam...beware!
My friends in PR warned me to never order or visit any nurseries in that area.

24
mine turns out to be mislabeled, i hope someone didn’t distribute/sell a bunch to people on accident, or on purpose.  Thankfully the tree was gifted to me

not my favorite fruit, resinous flavor akin to suriname cherry

Adam, do you have any guesses as to what it is?
Still looks to be a pretty fruit.
The people who have fruited the Asa-Grayii say it is bland anyways?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jackfruit variety
« on: May 27, 2025, 04:05:09 PM »
How much space do you have?
Even with a decent sized greenhouse, I stay away from jackfruits due to size.
They will all be self pollinating as they make male and female flowers on the same tree.
Black gold is supposed to be a smaller variety, but fruit quality is decent at best compared to some others I've had.
