Citrus General Discussion / Huge clementines

So, I found these clementines today at Lidl. They were all very big, each weighing over 200g. They were labeled Clemenules but the Clemenules I am used to are half that size. The skin is somewhat pebbled and although some were a bit puffy the taste was excellent. Do you think this is Clemenules or something else?

I posted this on facebook but since not everyone is on there I thought I'd share it here too.

In Switzerland, we have this Citrumelo called Nr. 82 because that is its catalogue number from Eisenhut nursery. It is a selection they made. It is not known what the original variety was. A fellow citrus enthusiast once said that this was by far the best Citrumelo he had ever tasted and that he thought it tasted like a grapefruit from the 80s. A few days ago, I picked the fruits and I have to say it is quite good for a Poncirus hybrid. The flesh is sour but with a notable sweetness. It is also bitter but not unpleasantly so. And there is very little poncirine taste, no resin. The juice is even better, I can drink it just like that, bo Poncirus notes whatsoever. I used the juice to make jelly and I think it tastes great.

Mind you, this is still far from eatable compared to any commercial citrus but much better than other Poncirus hybrids that I have tasted. It is also better than Dunstan in our climate. I have a smaller one in ground but it hasn't fruited yet. It did sail through its first winter with about -9C unscathed though. Considering that spring and early summer were much too cold (everything is about a month behind) I think it could taste even better in a normal year.

Cold Hardy Citrus / How to tell a fruit is frost damaged

I still have some fruit on my ichangensis x sinensis. We are expected to see -4/-5C the coming nights.
They have already seen a few -2/-3C and still look pristine.
Will they wrinkle or fall off or something like that when damaged by frost?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Sacaton Citrumelo F2 seedlings

Just wanted to show you my seedlings of a Sacaton citrumelo. This one is know to have a very high percentage of zygotic seeds. In fact, only Nr. 2 looks like a nucellar plant to me, 3 and 4 are completely monofoliate.

On one hand, this is excellent for breeding purposes but on the other hand, Sacaton Citrumelo is not a very good Citrumelo. It has a very strong Poncirus taste, much more so than others I have tried and it is rather small.

I picked the fruit in Eisenhut's nursery so the pollen donor could have been anything. There was a Yuzu nearby but also an Oronules, some sort of Changsha, a Thomasville and others.

Citrus General Discussion / Honey Pomelo seedlings

These are usually seedless but this winter I had a fruit that was full of large, flat seeds. I sowed them and they took their time but many germinated.

Now, I am wondering what to do.. I know pomelos do not come true from seed and our climate is much too cold to plant them in the ground but I'd still like to give them a try for the sake of it.

How long would they take to flower anyway? Any suggestions are welcome.

Is there any information available? Is there anyone growing variegated Poncirus?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Citrus ichangensis x sinensis (194)

Since it was mentioned in the Sudachi topic, I thought I'd share a pic of mine.


In short: Fruit can ripen here but, at least as a small plant, it is not coldhary enough for my place.

I planted it in 2015 and it survived its first winter with a low around -8C without a problem.
In the winter 16/17 it lost 3/4 of its leaves and half of its twigs to around -11C. I had protected it with three layers of fleece. We had some long-lasting freezes with many consecutive days below 0C which is what I believe did the damage. It grew back well and even flowered again but dropped the fruit.

I protected it with styrofoam in the winter of 17/18 and it has grown very well this year. Unfortunately no flowers.

Out of the 60 or so fruits I picked from my little tree about 5 had these injuries. Some were only 'leaking' but one had its seed come out. I have never seen this. Any ideas?

Citrus General Discussion / When to repot

I have some citrumelo seedlings six of which are in a tiny community pot. I was wondering when the best time was to separate and pot them individually was. Should I repot now or better do it next spring?
Also, is there a general rule when to repot citrus?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Citrumelo seedlings

These are some seedlings from fruits of "Sacaton" citrumelo that I picked at Eisenhut's.
I think they look rather odd. Some are completely monofoliate, with winged petiole, others are mono-, bi-, and trifoliate.


In fact, there is only one seedling that looks like a normal citrumelo to me:


There is a large Yuzu nearby. Could these be Citrumelo x Yuzu? Or is it too early to tell?

I have recently received budwood of this cross and grafted it on Poncirus. This is actually only my second succesful graft.
However, I can find very little information on it and would be grateful if anyone could share what they know.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Most exotic fruit for cool/short summers

I live in Switzerland, most years we're in zone 8a. Winters are usually long and very damp and summers lack heat. Prolonged freezes are not unusual.
To give you an idea: I can grow figs succesfully although the second crop only ripens in good years.

I have acquired some early pomegranates and a Kaki "early fuyu" but they haven't flowered yet.

Any additional ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I've noticed that some of my citrus plants grow unusually large spines on their second flush and well, I wonder why. Any ideas?
It is the first time my seed-grown Poncirus does it whereas my ichangensis x sinensis has done it before.

I was given some seeds of this interesting hybrid and three germinated. I'd like to know how they do with members here since there is not much information to be found on the internet. Apparently, they taste good enough and have some cold tolerance (which isn't surprising considering the parents). Pictures are most welcome.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Citsuma Prague

I'd like to share a picture of my Citsuma Prague which is the most bizarre citrus I have.
It has grown pretty well but it seems it wants to grow in all directions but upwards. If I let it grow it would be much wider than tall.
I know Ilya has one, too. I'd love to see some pictures.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Ichangquat other than 6-7-2

I have just bought an Ichangquat and I was told it is a sister hybrid of the 6-7-2 and that it came from the US but I couldn't get any more information (ie. on hardiness or taste). So, I'd appreciate any additional information there might be.
