The really slow growth low vigor is the problem. I get a lot of dwarf types that barely grow at all from grape seed. I get fed up and just pull the up. Curiously both excessive inbreeding and excessive outbreeding cause this. Self pollinated seedlings or similar highly inbred ones. Inbred ones if you cross them again vigor is restored and they turn normal. Or two species of grape that are far apart or complex hybrids some of them come out vigorous some come out stunted depending how the genes mix but that will eventually breed out of them as well and return to normal in a few generations if the abnormal ones are tossed. Could be a mutation but inbreeding and crossbreeding is the most common cause. A plant might pollinate itself. A small percent will have semi normal growth despite being inbred but many will be stunted or weird.

I just don't have the patience to wait years on a slow growing plant.

Grafting and embryo rescue/ tissue culture are used for weak intergeneric crosses for some of the reasons youve stated.

Anyone else here grow trichocereus cacti? I do but I've never had any fruit, ive read some are tastier than others.

Huh thats interesting. Atlanta is zone 8b but I see a wide variety of opuntia around town that survived for years in the ground: we have extremely wet winters too.

Perhaps a grex of species - I have some seeds from spineless opuntia (assuming they have glochids) as well as some hardy seeds from NJ (from experimental farm network which has at least 3 hardy opuntia seed selections). Honestly Id prefer regular degular spines over glochids lol.

Its been said on this thread or another that persea have compatibility issues but the only paper I've been able to find that hybridizes a hardy NA persea to p.americana is from the 50s! And iirc its only persea bubonia (red bay) and not persea palustris (swamp bay) and p.palustris might be slightly closer

Even in that 50s article there were some hybrids between persea species even tho the borbonia crosses failed. Has there been other documented experiments on interspecies crosses in this genus? Especially with p.palustris

I do not have the rootstock to graft all the varieties I want and frankly I'm nervous of grafting as I've never done it.

Does anyone know of any hardy cacti besides opuntia that survive outside out east z8 or lower?
I had a tiny hedgehog that perished last year and it made me curious if anything could take a cold, rainy winter. Most hardy cacti are only tested in arid parts out west not with both those conditions.

Doesn't have to be a species like any selections or peculiar specimens outdoors at a botanical park or such.

I think it means the seeds of the cultivar haven't been observed in-depth.
These seem to be intended to be propagated asexually.

Supersour 1 say the same thing and I would find it odd for ALL of these to be seedless given the parents.

Never heard of a Bumper Satsuma, is that a local name given to a Satsuma variety, I don't see it on the UCR CCPP database.
