Is there any orange or grapefruit hybrid with sweet edible skin?

I'm a big fan of kumquat hybrid and I was wondering how come there is no hybrid with big fruit yet?
I think it could be a very interesting fruit commercially, it's strange there isn't more hybridization testing.
Something like a orange or a grapefruit cross which maintain the size and combine the sweet skin.
I have an orangequat variegated and while the taste it's exactly like orange, it's still a kumquat in size.

My Nippon Orangequat produces fruit as large as a mandarin.  It isn't very good, though.  I have most kumquats and hybrids and my experience is that while the skin is edible on the hybrids it isn't actually sweet like "true" kumquats such as nagami, marumi, fukushu, meiwa. 

I would love a kumquat-grapefruit hybrid.   Even better if more seedless kumquats were available. You

The skin of mandarinquat is edible, although it isn't as good as kumquat.

You probably wouldn't consider this edible in the same sense as kumquats but the skin from the rinds of citron are very good in baked goods, or candied.

Its not big like an orange but skin of the Centennial Kumquat is sweet, and an exxellent balance with the virtually seedless flavorful tart flesh.

Skin of the red lime is very much edible and sweet and fruit is of decent size compared to kumquat.

Well if the fruit is not too sour, it's ok as long as it's not bitter
I didn't know the red lime was sweet. Didn't read raging reviews about that.

The centennial kumquat look exactly like my Orangequat variegated. Some website even changed the name too. But mine isn't seedless

So far the biggest kumquat hybrid I have is this. It was sold as Limequat, but I'm not sure if it's an Eustis whose fruit become extra big because there were few or it's a Sunquat. The fruit was edible out of hand at this ripeness. I had another Limequat eustis, smaller plant, and the fruit never got bigger than half of this.





On a side note, what the hell is a Taiwaniquat? Saw it mentioned somewhere on facebook and can't find any info, maybe mispelled?

Hello everyone, I found it funny that I came to this topic seeing if anyone followed my steps with the kumquats, but it seems that when these ideas were just being sketched I started my hybridization project.  I tell you that I have already made dozens of hybrids with kumquat and all these varieties that speak.  Although they still need to bear fruit, I already have all those crosses and more.  Nagami was the first one I used to start this since it is monoembryonic and I already have multiple hybrids.  I have retro crosses of calamondin, orangequat, limequat and mandarinquat with Nagami kumquat.  I made hybrids with kaffir and the craziest one is my Nagami x C. maxima crosses.  I hope to achieve a giant fruit with it.  and I have fruit to harvest in July from Nagami x Poncirus, Citrange Morton, etrog and Buddha's hand.  I also made hybrids with tarocco and moro blood oranges.  When they start bearing fruit I will really have the largest collection of kumquat and its hybrids.  maybe nimpo Orange x nagami will allow me to achieve a giant kumquat with edible skin being 75% kumquat 💪🤗

The only citrus that I know that the rind is sweet and and the fruit can be eaten like an apple is Turunji.

I've been told that Xianfengcheng sweet orange has edible skin, although haven't tried it myself.

Many of the sweet lemons have sweet edible skin, and are worth seeking out.

Re: Turunji. I have a different citron that can be eaten like an apple with zero bitterness, although I wouldn't necessarily describe it as very sweet. I suspect Turunji is a pretty standard citron and that there are dozens of citron varieties that are as good.

If my Meiwa would set some pollen, then I would try making some hybrids with it. I suspect most Nagami F1 seedlings will have a lot of acid in the fruit, which if true would mean using very sweet variety pollen to counteract the acid is probably a good approach.

I'm doing some hybrids at the moment of NZ Grapefruit x sweet lemon, which should have a decent chance of edible skin.

Also I understand that there are some egg-sized kumquat hybrids in China.

For my money, hyuganatsu is the closest, but the flavedo isn't great (the albedo is.) There are other more obscure citrus with reportedly sweeter pith, but I haven't tried them, and I like the flesh of hyuganatsu so much that it's hard to imagine something topping it. None of the Zanthoxylum-like numbing-bitter of kumquats and their derivitives, either.

What about Australian Sunrise? I don't have it but from what I read it has a peel like kumquat. (The peel comes from its grandfather, Calamondin, or lets better say from its grand-grandfather, kumquat.)

F. obovata, as least the one I have, is very good. It has big sweet peel and sweet pulp with mandarine taste. It is the best tasting Citrus fruit for me and all my family.

Haruka is said to have a very sweet rind and sweet pulp. It was extremly difficult to get but I have it now. If you want budwood please send me a private message.

I have tasted some Citrons in Sizily. The peel of all is sweet and fruity and thus edible like an apple.

What exactly do you mean by "Red Lime"? Is it the cross with Fingerlime described here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_lime? Or is it another plant?

Australian Sunrise. Yes it has edible peel. It does not match Fortunella Kumquats pulp wise. I would not say it is bad, but it is not up to the former hype. Big fruit are OK. Seems 100% true from seed.

Turunji x kumquat might give big kumquat.  Maybe a backcross to kumquat. 3/4 kumquat 1/4 Turunji would be more moderate in size.

It seems that F1 crosses with Kumquat have a thin peel. Kumquat x Buddhas Hand has a very thin peel that is not particulary tasty though edible. All Limequats have a relatively thin peel. Given the fact that Limes are F1 hybrids with Citron it seems clear that from all crosses between Kumquat and Citron only F2 (F3, F4 etc. also) crosses will have a peel thick enough to be of culinary interest no matter what Citron you use for breeding. Kumquat Buddhas Hand x Kumquat has fruits as big as a medium size plum, so not very big.

C Maxima has very thick pith, not alot of juice but it is the best fish marinade I have used so far.  I wonder how will that affect/influence the kumquat?
