I know you are excited to see your raft take, but be patient and don't be messing with it.
Remember, there is almost nothing you can do to improve that graft now, but messing with it, there are a few things, perhaps many, you can do that will not be good for it.

Yes, I believe members have airlayered mango and posted about it on the forum.

If you do keep your airlayer and plant it in the ground, plant a seed next to and and do an approach graft after it grows to add a second root system with e tap root.  You may end up like me though and just keep the second tree, in my case it was very vigorous and is not bigger than the airlayerd tree which by the way, is doing well.  I grafted the variety and airlayered unto the seedling, added a couple more too.  Both tree are inches appart from each other.

Perhaps I will have a candidate for this post next year.

I have a seedling AP (I think it is AP) that is really good.  More on the purely sweet side with no tart.  Perhaps next season I will share some fruit around to get the opinion of others.

If you look carefully, you will observe that what you did is not what Sapote did.  What you did is what experienced grafters would assume he should have done, which is closer to a veneer graft.  What he actually did on the grave part was cut two parallel lines wider than the scion, cut the tops so he could peal the back off.  On wood that is pushing the back will slip right off.
The idea is that it would leave the cambium layer exposed over the entire contact area where the back was removed.  It was then simply getting the scion which was not cut vey deep to touch the cambium layer and you would get your graft.

My assessment of what you did is your scion (coffin) is cut too deep and your root stock (grave) too shallow.  So the coffin is sitting on the grave not lowered into it. It could be a wonderful veneer graft and take just fine but it was not what Sapote was suggesting.

If you have another scion it may be a good experiment to try his grave and coffin method as a comparison.  ... I hate that name.

The method is counter intuitive for many folks who have watched a lot of grafting videos but if you do bud grafting (where you peel the bark back, you will see exactly what he is doing.  For the rest of us, we keep trying to improve on his technique for example the post below was from someone who tried and was partially sucessful and found a way to make it better.

Do you graft, perhaps you can add a branch of Pickering to one of your mango.  It fruits a lot and doesn't get very large quickly.

By the way, might I ask why you picked the mango you picked?  What are your plans for the Cotton Candy when it gets bigger?

Were you thinking of planting the seed or acquiring a plant of the variety?

In the event you are planning on planting the seed, please be aware that if it germinates and successfully attain fruiting age and size you will most likely get a fruit different from the one the seed came from.
I believe Kent is mono-embryonic and what comes from the seed will be a mix of the flower and pollen donors.  You may get something better or worse or perhaps even close but you wouldn't know.  If you must have a Kent you may want to graft a Kent scion to your seedling at some point.

Look on the forum for Pond Apple, they smell wonderful but have no taste.  And that is being kind.

By the way not everything grafts well to pond apple.  There is a annona graft compatibility table floating around on the forum.  In my experience, Cherilata does well on pond apple.  Some say Ilama does to but not in my experience.

Thoughts on Pickering or Pina Colada?

I will like to see this tested.

If it works, there will be a nice biology paper and explanation, after the fact, on why it worked and why we should have reasonably expected it to.
If it doesn't, we will set it aside as a lesson learned / point of knowledge and move on to the next test.

Of the two options, the better one is to test and determine the answer, the poorer option is to avoid finding out because you have concluded that it would not work.

My suggestion for those not interested in trying, stay on the side and watch, perhaps we will all learn something.
