Cold Hardy Citrus / Lucky Day
« on: July 19, 2019, 01:03:48 PM »
I was lucky today. As I was driving to visit my brother I remembered growing up in that neighborhood and that 2 or 3 of the homes on his street had trifloliata growing in there yard. I decided I would turn 2 blocks down from his house to take a look. A lot of the homes have been abandon and a lot of them are being rebuilt. Wala there it was.  Do they root easily?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Protecting fruit
« on: July 17, 2019, 02:26:16 PM »
Does those nylon bags really protect your fruit. I have had my tiny citrus fruit eaten off of my trees before so next year I want to protect. I know that I have had problems with field mice eating fruits and vegetables. I had placed bird netting around my raised bed about 4 years ago and the snakes were getting caught in it when trying to catch the mice. I try my best not to kill the none poisonous snakes, they are beneficial and it's illegal to kill non-poisonous snakes in Georgia.

Please tell me what you use to protect fruit.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Growing From Seed
« on: July 09, 2019, 12:26:20 PM »
I started some fruit from seed a few weeks ago. In the beginning I avoided starting from seed because I thought I was too old (61) to start and wait for fruit. I found out it may not take as long as I thought so I started some seed. How many of you have grown your fruit producing trees from seed and how long did it take?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Geothermal Greenhouse
« on: July 06, 2019, 12:17:25 AM »
Does anyone have or ever had a Geothermal greenhouse. I wish I lived on rural property so that I could build one. It did cost a lot to heat the greenhouse, when I had it.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Bad Sellers
« on: June 30, 2019, 11:43:56 AM »
I was scanning Ebay to see what cold hardy citrus was listed. While scanning I ran across this seller offering a hardy blood orange. Knowing blood orange is zone 9 citrus I had to contact and ask what zone where these bood oranges for and this was his reply.
Dear will2358,
Thank you for contacting us. This blood orange tree can thrive in USDA Hardiness Zone 4. If you have any other question or concern, don't hesitate to contact us.
Kind Regards,

Of course I had to respond back. Sellers like this ruin it for the good honest sellers. My goodness he went down to zone 4.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Meyer Lemon seed
« on: June 29, 2019, 09:20:35 PM »
I am growing some sunkist lemon seed (Meyer lemon). Do you think I can get close to the meyer lemon? I have a very limited income so I thought I would try to grow from seed. I know that hybrids do not grow true from seed but why not try?I was very lucky that a family member is buying me a Changsha orange (one that I have wanted for some time now) to plant. If anyone has some cuttings that they can share for postage I would greatly appreciate them. Let me know in the message section.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Hardy Citrus Taste
« on: June 29, 2019, 08:28:07 PM »
What hardy citrus trees have good flavor? I know the statsumas are good but what other hardy citrus have good flavor? I don't care if they have seeds. I grew up eating citrus with seeds so I don't mind seeds, that's why I ordered the Chagsha.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Unknown citrus
« on: June 29, 2019, 02:50:33 PM »
I bought this about 4 years ago. Due to illness I had not been able to do any gardening for about 4 years. I went out this spring to do so cleanup and I found the little citrus still alive in a 4" pot and it was still alive. Of course I had a wow! moment. It had grown as much as it could in a 4" pot with a few roots in the ground. 4 years of winter in a 4" pot in zone 8a. I bought it off Ebay and the seller says he did not know which orange it was but that it was a sweet orange. If I had planted it 4 years ago it would be large enough to bear fruit. It was a rooted cutting. I had my doubts back then that it would be sweet, but maybe. I am wondering now if maybe it is a Chansha mandarine. It has grown a lot since I planted it so maybe in a couple years more I will see fruit. It is about 3 1/2 feet now.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Grafted Citrus
« on: June 27, 2019, 08:09:39 PM »
If a citrus is hardy why is it grafted to a hardy root stock. If it is hardy to 10 degress shouldn't it be hardy to that temp without grafting?
