Sugar Apple (Annona squamosa) The "big" ones
« on: August 25, 2022, 02:02:09 PM »
3yr old tree.  Put out 13 finished fruits this Spring/Summer.

These were the last and best.......8 in all that I left to the very end.

I wanted to see how long they would hang on and how big they might get but one fell off by itself and I decided to go ahead and pick them all off.

Plus there are new flowers forming everywhere for the fall crop.

Here are the ones I thought were "pretty"

The taste on these is amazing.....no grit at all....seed count low for sugar apple standards and they are all big and well formed....I imagine they will germinate well.

Enough talk....here goes the fruit porn

Congrats!!! However, I believe you picked them way too early. You need to wait until the skin carpels open up a bit more to show the yellowish or pinkish in between. That's when you get the maximum flesh-to-seed ratio because unlike the general belief, it's the flesh-to-seed ratio that is important. Not the number of seeds per fruit. My 2-cents.

20-25 per fruit.  Which compared to many that I have tried around here is low.

Some fruit half of the size here have 40 or more seeds

I don't really know if they would have hung on much longer.

Some were ready (or ripe) earlier....to the point that if you pulled or twisted lightly the stem would come off with the cone shaped pit attached.

One fruit fell off of the tree by itself and an upcoming vacation menas I could not have seen the individual fruit for almost a full week.

Could not risk them all hitting the ground and being lost.

about half of those picked were soft to the touch an were eaten (by me) yesterday and they were perfect.

Two of the largest ones were still firm and could have been on the tree for a while yet.

Flesh to seed ratio seemed very good in comparison to other variety of sugar apple I have tried here.....but that is not to say this one is the "best".....just the best I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy.

I am sure there is some superstar fruit out there waiting to be tasted.....looking forward to finding such fruits soon

Thank you for your comment and recommendation

Sounds like you picked them at the perfect time.
It's amazing how they can be hard in the morning and laying on the ground in the
afternoon soft. There's not a big window. Do you think these are the Big Eyes being
offered in Taiwaan and Mexico more recently? Also do you think this is a cross?

The trees I got them from are supposed to be Thai Lessard. These were some of the first fruit set of the season. They were amazing, I take these over any atemoya I have tasted so far.
