so by opening the tree up, how does that encourage fruiting?
if more sun hits the trunk, does that encourage fruiting? do sun rays against a tree trunk cause any type of reaction? obviously leaves are able convert sunlight into energy but can tree trunks do anything with sunlight?

It looks like it's already summer in New York...trees have leaves. For us in Montreal, no leaves yet. Why such a difference for 6hours of road?

If Adam may permit, i think the theory is that the jaboticaba only produces fruit on wider caliper branches. So if you have a lot of thin branches those aren't going to produce anyway and sap the energy of the tree from other wider branches. Don't think it has anything to do with amount of sunlight coming into the tree. I've yet to test this theory for myself, but it makes perfect sense to me and will probably do a lot more jaboticaba pruning in the future. So far i was relcutant to prune them because they are so slow growing to begin with.

The slow growth of the tree makes me scared of coming at it with a pair of shears also....

I am determined to get a better shape out of the tree from Bryan.  My bigger tree is fruiting (both at tips and on trunk) but I am not pleased with the shape.  Yours has a very nice shape to it.

Robert- how many fruit is your tree producing. I'd gladly give up my tree's comely appearance for a few more fruit. I have only gotten about 3 fruit total so far.

Weather forecasting snow in Buffalo and rain in Brooklyn, NY come to mind...

On the bigger tree I have historically gotten 2-3 per year.  However, I'm hopeful for more this year.  I pruned mine as well, and I've been more generous with the fert and sun.  It is holding 4 marble sized fruit right now, including one right at the base of the trunk and yesterday I found another 3-5 flowers.

The tree from Bryan is now ~2' tall and has not yet flowered.

I have a number of jabs in the ground and prune with an 'iron fist'.Once they reach 8 feet I take out a segment or one quarter to the centre that acts like a window for plcking.Branches are taken back to the trunk and there-after only trimming and 'haircutting' is needed.I recently plucked the living daylights out of 2 fine leafed 9 footers and got bucket loads. My large leafed and yellow jaboticabas just don't fruit properly and I suspect I am too warm for the yellow and the large leafed is just a sook.

I find the jaboticaba pruning very interesting. I pruned one in-ground jabo and it promptly died. And it was only a light pruning. I am afraid to prune the one I have now. You do have beautiful trees.

I think Oscar is probably correct about the fruiting being better on old wood, than just getting more sun. There's someone on the east coast that has jabos growing as understory and they were fruiting heavily.

I think Adam is wrong about sun being a factor to jaboticaba fruiting, but not 100% sure. I just said that based on observation that jaboticabas here where the base of the tree is in almost total shade from canopy and still fruiting heavily mostly at the base. It seems to me that if what Adam was saying were true only parts exposed to heavy sun would fruit heavily, like top most parts of trees, but the opposite seems to be the case. But i think he's right about minimum size caliper being necessary for tree to form fruits. Thin branches are just not going to fruit no matter how much sun they get.

Full sun seems to promote the largest crops with jaboticabas but it is surprising how productive some are in the shade. They also have more crops per year when in full sun.
