I haven’t made Sugarcane juice for several months now and I forgot to report back how the motorized unit works. Well, it works great. It makes juicing so much easier although I am getting a lot less exercise now. It is still a difficult task cleaning the sugarcane stalks and I get plenty of exercise doing this but at least I can relax during the juicing portion.

I can now juice a full gallon of juice relatively easily and doing several gallons is much easier now compared to doing it manually.

My main issue with the motorized unit is that it doesn’t have enough torque to power through large pieces of cane. My Sugarcane is typically thick to I have to cut the medium sized canes in half and my larger pieces need to be quartered. If you run thick pieces through the unit, it will just stall and I have to power it down and reverse the wheel manually.

The second issue with the motorized unit is that for some reason, my juice seems to have more bits of fiber in it. To circumvent this issue, I simply filter the juice through a single layer of cheese cloth.

I tried to run the juice through a coffee filter but it clogged instantly.

Here’s the final product

The San Diego Yellow juice, still yellow after 24 hours. I added lemon juice as an antioxidant

The Asian Black juice. The juice color is dark because I juice with the skin on so the color from the peel comes off with the juice. The juice from the Asian Black is exceptionally good this year.

These two Sugarcane varieties are must haves for anyone who loves Sugarcane juice. I don’t give my kids soda so this is a real treat for my two daughters. The Sugarcane plant is like a giant sweet Wheatgrass that can uptake all the good nutrients in the soil so if you feed your plants with good nutrients, you can expect the plant to suck up some of those nutrients which goes back into the juice you drink.

Cool. I bought your SD yellow and Asian black sugarcane from you via Spaugh. They are lemongrass-size now. Can't wait to juice them next year.

Juiced some California yellow and Florida red heirloom sugarcanes on Monday. It's good. You're right about those motorized juicers. Those red Florida heirloom sugarcanes are massive cane. I had to cut them into quarters in order to feed them through the juicer.

Simon that juice  looks awesome!!! with some Rum it would be even better lol
I seen a grinder attached to a bench with a heavy wire brush, and revolution down toward the bench and u can push or pull the cane under it lifting & lowering it as needed all of the peel dirty stuff  comes off, but is messy.

Hopefully peoples sugarcane plants grew well for them from all the cuttings Simon supplied last year.  I juiced my first few canes this week and made margaritas with them.  These are by far the best margs you will ever have.  The don julio 70th tequila is amazing if anyone wants to try it, they have it at costco and bevmo.  Glass of ice, fresh sugarcane juice, fresh squeezed lime juice, and a shot of tequila.

194$ total with CA sales tax and free shipping off ebay.  The place selling them was in Bakersfield or somewhere near there.  Theres a bunch of people selling the same chinese units on ebay.  Mine was missing some screws but whatever I had some metric hardware laying around that fit

I didnt ask Simon about cleaning the canes, what do you use?  I used a scotchbright pad on them, it made pretty quick work out of it.  Some canes have a little dirt or mold on them that need scrubbed, otherwise, not a lot of work involved.  4ft piece of cane makes a nice size jar of juice.  I juice 5 limes into the jar immediately to keep the juice from oxidizing based on simons recommendation and then make drinks with that.

My Asian black sugarcane is tiny, the stalks are tiny. Don't know why.

Brad,

Unfortunately the cane nodes I last bought from you, I couldn't root.
Let me know if you have some rooted to sell, will come and pick up.

Thanks,

Ok, I can root some yellow ones.  The black are growing but they seem to take a lot more heat to get going and are slower to establish.

The key to rooting them is use a heat mat or greenhouse or do it in summer.

Ill toss a couple sticks in some pots in the GH to get rooted.  Contact me in June.

For small quantities, I do the same as you and just use a scrubber and wash it twice to get all the dirt off.

I recently purchased a small electric power washer and the last batch of juice I brought you was power washed while the canes were still in the ground. I then chopped them down and then gave it a second hand wash.

Juicing the canes is very quick and easy, cleaning the canes is the hardest part in my opinion.

I did see the V shaped scraper that clean the outer peel but I read somewhere that the skin of the Sugarcane has done good health benefits.

My whole family loves fresh pressed Sugarcane juice. I personally still like it best with Calamansi juice as the antioxidant. The calamansi is very Tart so it prevents the color of the juice from darkening and the flavor is incredible because the tartness helps cut the sweetness. The Calamansi also has a wonderful tangerine like flavor.

Sugarcane is a great prepper crop. It contains lots of water, minerals, sugars and it doesn’t need refrigeration if you leave it in the ground.

Speaking of juicers, this lemon/lime juicer is the best.  They have them online, highly recommend.

I have that juicer for citrus, Brad.  It's great.  I have a question concerning the natural sugar which is evaporated cane juice. (They sell it at Costco.)  Would you say it's healthier than pure white refined sugar?

Pulled from the web, seems too good to be true, but whatever.  Its better than drinking soda.

It helps cure the common cold and other infections and also fight fever as it boosts the body's protein levels. Besides these, there are a few more great health benefits of sugarcane juice that you must learn about:

Reviving an old thread.
Green Planet Farm doesn't have the juicing machine anymore in eBay.
Has anyone had luck finding an alternative source that's not overseas?

Thanks,

I know of a couple people that ordered from overseas from Alibaba.com or similar and they received their machines in great condition for only a couple hundred bucks. I believe it was between 2-300 shipped but that was pre pandemic. Sorry I don’t know any local sources

How fast do these canes grow?  Do they send rhizomes everywhere just like running bamboos?

I love sugar cane juice.  I always bought it fresh squeeze from street vendor when I was in Thailand.

Check amazon type in sugar cane juicer machine. The hand crank durable ones are going for about $260s.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Thanks guys,

I see there are some electric machines for $500-$600. I'd pay that instead and not have to hand crank, Lol.
Also of interest are the orange juice machine for about $750+.

They are clumping. However, in abandoned patches the stalks can fall over and root--spreading the patch much faster than would happen otherwise. I have seen some abandoned patches that grew fairly large, but I would not consider them invasive.
