Is it Shiranui/Dekopon?
BorisR:
I bought these "super mandarines" at our store today. Weight from 230 to 300 grams. The flesh is very tender and juicy. The taste is delicate and sweet. I assume it's Shiranui. But I haven't tried it before. There is almost no characteristic neck. Maybe it's something else after all? Some kind of Ugli? What do you think?
a_Vivaldi:
The flesh looks a lot like Dekopan to me, especially with how it's a bit dry/has vesicles that separate. The skin seems thin and no neck is odd though. But most if not all the dekopan I've had are from semi-arid California, but if these are coming from say the Black Sea coast of Turkey or Georgia, then maybe it's just a climate difference.
Is the flavor fairly unique, with very low acidity? To me, ripe dekopan has a flavor similar to canned mandarins, but I don't remember if the canned mandarins we usually have in the US are similar to ones one might find in Russia.
BorisR:
Yes, you described the pulp correctly. The skins between the segments are very thin. The acidity is very low. The vesicles are almost spherical and crumble.

This is how my dekopan is, I think you are right with the identification.
The vesicles aren't always dry to the point of being crumbly, sometimes they are around the edges, but they are separable like pummelos and unlike typical mandarins.
BorisR:
I bought a few more pieces today. the neck is better formed on large specimens. So it's definitely a Dekopan.
