Artocarpus lanceifolius
« on: June 02, 2024, 10:58:16 PM »
We need more keledang in our life.

Marang/tangerine mixed flavor.  Should’ve take pics of the bigger fruit.  Needs work on pollination

Was this from franks? Is there going to be more? I would fly over just to try it. Marang still better?

They are usually way bigger and smoother than that. The taste I know leans more towards caramel in a fruity way than tangerine or marang. The sections are bigger than marang with more flesh. There seems to be a good deal of variation in fruits between trees.

Can you sell us some live seedlings?   :)

I can't get the seeds to survive.  I got some great seeds from you that had already started germinating but I couldn't get them to grow further.  I think the seeds are really sensitive.

get your tickets ready. i think more are coming. but whatever it needs to get better fruit set isn't being done it seems. maybe gotta bring rotting fruit under the tree to get more flies to come and pollinate.

I’ve been growing these for 20 years. They’ve been consistent good bearers, though not last year and this year after a windstorm broke some branches. Productivity and pollination have been good. Very easy to harvest transport and eat unlike some other Artocarpus sp. I find similar flavor components that others have mentioned. We really enjoy them. I put marang right at the top of a fruit quality list but keledang is very good. Not being quite as good as marang is not a condemnation but high praise.   And they are so much easier to deal with. I think the trees are easier to manage also.
I hear there are larger types but I haven’t been able to track them down. We graft them on jackfruit but the seedlings should be fine.

Aloha, Steph

I am the opposite and prefer keledang. Admittedly marangs have more variation and are actually 2 species and much bigger trees. I prefer the marangs from the Philippines.

Do you need two of these for cross pollination? I only have one young tree

One is enough and I believe all Artocarpus are monoecious.

I have a lacucha that flowers but the "fruits" are spongy, seedless, and taste horrible. They do not get bigger than an inch or so. Is this any exception or is there something going on? The tree is a decade old.

One is enough and I believe all Artocarpus are monoecious.

A. Támarah and A. Rigidus are cross pollination types.
But for mostly artocarpus trees you need to have minimum 3 trees to have fruit full with flash, and better from different batch of seeds.
But best to have 4 plants.
If you have one tree - you will run to issue missing flash.
If you plant 3 plant them in triangular pattern, with one tree facing do dominant direction of wind, like this at list this one will cross pollinate other 2
Same with pattern for two trees in line with dominant wind direction

I have at least four seedlings sprouted from the seeds I just got from palologrower.  I am going to put one in the ground in my greenhouse and keep the others in containers as backups for a while.

While all Artocarpus are monoecious their own pollen may not be available when female flowers are receptive that's true. The do prefer to outcross.
