Anyone have red malaysian guava
« on: June 20, 2024, 08:39:17 AM »
Recently I found out that my GF loves guava so I'm looking to add to my guava collection. Does anyone have the Red Malaysian?

Does any comments on the flavor, or growing habits?
Regards,

   Gary

Hi Gary,
I do have a red Malaysian guava that started fruiting couple of years back.  As it is still in a 5 gallon container, it just gives one or two fruits a year.  The fruits tastes really awesome.  Worth growing one.  About growing habits, mine almost started as a seedling.  The initial year or so It was very tiny.  After that it caught up and started growing a bit faster.  Hope this helps!

I have one in similar situation to poster above.  Got a small starter plant about 9 inches tall, grows very fast in the warm weather.  Its about close to 4 years old now and about 6 feet tall if I was to guess.  I moved it from a 5 gallon to a 15 gallon this spring and its sporting a few buds for the first time.  Cannot comment on the fruit but this is a easy plant.  If my fruit is not that great I will just graft onto it or use the fruit for other uses.

I liked the flavor, it's more intense than standard pink but for some reason I remember it being a worse texture than guajava. Tree is very aesthetic with the red leaves. Less cold hardy than guajava, but no worries in 10a.

If you have space I think it's worth it. If not that much space, tack a graft onto a guajava.

Thanks all. Where did y'all get your plants? There's a seller on Ebay in Puerto Rico that has the red malaysian, anyone here bought from them?

Never mind the Ebay seller, I checked their feedback and with 20+ dead plants shipped in the last month I'll stay away.

Mine came from Exotica nursery.  I would say this one is maybe not the most common guava found in commercial nurseries but that it is not that hard to find either if you can look around your area.

I only tried fruits from my air-layered tree. They were not very sweet but were so good in terms of texture and taste. I detected some berry-like flavors too.

Are we talking red fleshed or red foliaged? The red and purple foliaged types usually make great mulch.

Yes I did grow that type before and I thought fruit was too poor once the excitement of the foliage colour had passed.

gnappi, I gotta agree with Mike about the taste of this fruit. The tree looks nice with the dark red leaves, fruit looks like with the dark berry colored skin and pink flesh. But when I ate my Red Malaysian fruits, I did not think it was anything special to keep around. I found the taste of Mexican Cream better tasting. I just top worked my 2 Home Depot trees in 5 gallon pots and use them for my rootstock.

But it must be just everyone's personal taste since I have a good friend who swears his fruits are the best tasting guavas, and they like to make some type of juice from the fruits. He purchased his larger tree from a nursery (Moon Valley Nursery), maybe 5 ft tall when it was purchased. This tree grew very fast, now it is a big bushy tree after 2-3 years and he does get lots of fruits on the tree. The tree is about 8-9ft tall and just as wide, gets larger size fruits than any I had on my smaller potted trees. He waits for the fruits to drop (ripe) then eats them or make juice. Fruits don't get damaged since he has artificial turf under the tree.

If after reading all these comments from everyone, you still want to graft this variety on your tree, then send me a message, maybe we can trade cuttings for the Red Malaysian guava. I can go over to his house and ask to take some fresh cuttings for you.

Ok, found some old photos of the fruit from my friends' heavy fruit producing tree. I only have photos of this first fruit he gave me, and the skin is light red, most have much darker red coloring than the one I'm showing you below. I also forgot to mention his fruits have a very strong tropical guava smell, the kitchen smells like a guava when I leave a few fruits on the table to eat later.
