black star Surinam cherry flowering
« on: January 17, 2025, 02:39:48 AM »
Got this seedling Black Star that was never fruited... it looks like there are some flower buds showing... Is it too early in January? or may be this year's socal winter is a bit warmer? Also, is it true sometimes seedling of black cherry yields red? (not a fan of the resinous taste)

I remember hearing somewhere that seedlings of black varieties of Surinam Cherry can revert back. Good luck, I hope yours stay true.

Sounds normal... Mine bloom off and on throughout the year.

Thank you all for the replies…
these winter flowers can hold fruit or they just fall off? I was told it can flower only in April or later.
Hope this will hold black variety fruits..

I have had them hold fruit over this winter period and ripen fully early Spring if it doesn't get too cold. If you get a cold snap, they will drop.

It's true that black-fruited parents can have red-fruited children, but they can taste just as good. I've had black fruited trees that produced terrible fruit and red-fruited ones that tasted fantastic.

I had heard this same thing but someone along the way clarified explaining that if
they are grafted black varieties the top graft could perhaps eventually fail and the
the understock then take over.

Of course with seedlings there can easily be significant variations due to either the
genetics or the pollinator of the seedlings.

Both of the above seem to be far more reasonable explanations.

was told it’s 3-4 years. It’s about 3 ft tall.

My grafted black star has black fruit but my black zill seedling has red fruit. They still taste good. I have an orange fleshed brazilian and I am thinking of planting a white.
