Red Sapote (Timonius minahasae)
« on: January 22, 2025, 04:12:19 PM »
i saw this on anderson tropicals, but it was sold out by the time I saw it. i remember a topic about this came up a few months ago, is anyone growing it?
I'm on the hunt for jaboticaba, Eugenia, Pouteria, Passiflora, and annona fruits (like the fruit part), if you have any to spare, lemme know!  I'm also looking for any plants that could bear fruit soon :)

Super new rare species looking like a tomato😂
Don’t think so
A friend I have is growing in Europe but still small plants.
Would be very ultra tropical

Was gonna grab some but Exoteninsel claims the germination rate of seeds is pretty low (although they have a vested interest since they were selling plants): https://www.exoteninsel.com/Red-Sapote-maybe-Timonius-minahassae-1-small-potted-plant-1-kleine-getopfte-Pflanze/EI10945

I'm on the fence because the both have similar pictures, no data on how big they get or if they are diecious. Don't want to have only 1 grow to end up not self fertile. But we'll see from other peoples experiences!

Well yes there was a thread in September 2024. Not sure why you couldn't use the search function and find it. https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=56365

I would implore people to stop calling this a sapote. It's not in the Sapotaceae family nor is it from the Americas.

Eugenia luschnathiana = CURUIRI.    Talisia esculenta = PITOMBA
I do not recommend people deal with Fruit Lovers, Prisca Mariya, Fernando Malpartida, Śrī Vṛndāvan Nātḥ Dās

What's wrong with calling it that? Common names are always a bit of a free for all. That's what we have scientific names for, right?

It collides regional irrational naming with taxonomic nonsense with common name and squares the confusion. New Guinea has about 80 species in this genus. The word sapote is a recipe for confusion.

I ate this fruit. And I wrote a review in the facebook group and a new topic on this forum.

Thanks for your review!

You mention it is also called 'Lompi'? I think that's a better name than red sapote.

I don't know what name to call this fruit, but locals seem to call it Lompi.
