Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Avocado didn't set fruit
« on: May 17, 2014, 11:12:02 PM »
Its a Day and flowered a couple of years sgo?  That is really late timing wise f I r a Day to floeer.  Did it flower at all in late 2013 or early 2014?

The fruit ripened around September/October in 2013. I don't remember when it flowered in 2013.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado didn't set fruit
« on: May 17, 2014, 02:34:26 PM »
My 5' Day avocado produced 5 avocados last Fall. It burst into full bloom a couple weeks ago, but every single bloom fell off without setting fruit. What gives? Will there be another bloom cycle...? Was it the lack of water? The tree looks good, no pest problems, has been growing steadily. I can't imagine what is wrong.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Comparison of Red Jackfruits
« on: May 16, 2014, 06:05:59 PM »
I picked up a little 3G Excalibur Red this week!

54
My SK flowered twice with no fruit.  It grew quite fast though.

Now I am thinking about grafting Kari or another variety to one of the branches, hoping it will cross pollinate SK and also give two varieties.

Maybe the SK just requires more maturity? Does anyone here have an SK that didn't produce for the first few years and then did--without another cultivar nearby?

55
Benders Grove has grafted soursop, "Miami" cv. of a tree that fruits regularly (in Miami), as i understand.

I just bought a 3g from Bender's; it is my understanding that they were grafted from Lara's trees.

56
Even with other varieties around I question how prolific SK is.  I dont ever see it setting lime any of the others.

Some peel like Dwarf but I feel it is consistently the most bland and least sweet of all the orange varieties.

I have never been overly excited about the taste of Fwang Tung.  B-17 is too inconsistent.

I will concur with Rob that SK is not as prolific as Kari.

57
I have a Kari and Sri Kembangan. I love them both, although I suspect that Sri Kembangan sets fruit best with another cultivar close by. So if you are limited to just one, I would say to go with Kari.

My Sri Kembangan had some nutritional deficiencies the first 3 years, but its roots are deep enough now that it is getting everything it needs. I never had any difficulties with the Kari.

Thanks!!

LOVE that picture Hollywood, she's SO cute  :)...her shovel is perfect for her,lol...

Thanks! She LOVES playing in the dirt. I am hoping, but doubting, that translates to weeding in a few years.

Here is the thread on a recent Florida soursop discussion: http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=10251.msg131485#msg131485

Lara Farms reportedly has a reliably producing soursop in South Florida. I just bought one from Mike Bender.

I don't generally use anything for health unless it has been well verified. Although if I had cancer I suppose I would try anything. But that discussion is probably better had in the Off Topic section.

A picture of my 3 year old planting her first tree last weekend: a Kampong avocado we bought from Bender's Grove.

Thanks! Just got back from an awesome ornamental tree sale at Fairchild. The weekend is already off to a great start!

I vote mamey for agricultural diversity and the health of your 9 mango trees.

No canistel? Even if you don't like it as a stand alone fruit, it is AMAZING in fried rice.

Where's the rain?!?!? We get 1 day last Saturday. That's it?!? I don't see a drop of rain in the foreseeable forecast either.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Trompo or Oro canistel?
« on: May 07, 2014, 01:19:51 PM »
Canistel is very easy to graft.  I have started multi grafting my ten foot Trompo.  So far I have added Fairchild 2, Long Hawaiian, Ross, and Fitzpatrick.  Film wrapped, leafless scions have a near 100% take rate with minimal care using a simple cleft.

For anyone who goes the topworking route, I can recommend Trompo as a good base to work off of. I had a beautiful, bushy Fairchild 2 that died after something ate all the leaves last Spring. I replaced it with Trompo, the same critter defoliated it, but Trompo sprang right back to life.

Excalibur Red and Deng Suria (also known as Red Morning) are a darker more pronounced red.  Cristela is lighter red with a tinge of pink.

Rob,

Do you like Cristela? Mine is a few years away from producing. It should be noted that it is not a vigorous grower.

The tree, that is. Not the employee. ;)

I have only tried Trompo out of the canistels mentioned, but I like it a lot. Although somewhat dry (not gooey would be a better description), the flavor is good and doesn't have the bitter/latex aftertaste I get with some canistels. And I like that it is not gooey because it makes it easier to handle. For small children it is a winner.

Luc- so glad you're ok.

FruitAddict- Good luck during the next dry season; hope you can get that roof replaced soon!

Truly Tropical in Delray Beach sells atemoyas. They are delicious.

I had my VP pruned and topworked in August/September and it has not bloomed. I had hoped the topworking was not extensive enough to make it skip another year of production, but alas.

Coconut, don't eat the plate-lol

Wow, several desserts.  Thanks, all!

I knew there were some creative forum members when it comes to different ways to consume eggfruit (which is an awful name since eggs aren't sweet....and it doesn't taste like eggs....not easy to convince newcomers that it is worth a try.

Has anybody sliced canistel and dried it?

Dried canistel is very yummy.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Galaxy Mango update!
« on: February 09, 2014, 09:34:12 PM »
Ok, let me clear the air about the Galaxy mango. PIN is shooting for a 2015 introduction date. While there may be a very small limited quantity available later this spring, we are planning on using most available plants that were grafted by Pin to produce more bud wood for future propagation, we hopefully will have some available this spring but due to the limited amount of available budwood that we had available to us this past summer, filling the demand for 2014 is impossible. I hope everyone understands this, believe me we want to get them in all your hands, but Rome wasn't built in a day and the demand well exceeds the supply at this time. I wish I had hundreds of them, but it is way more important to have an available supply of budwood so this variety can be enjoyed by all!

It must be tough having hundreds of best friends who rely on you. ;) Sorry to hear the pressure is on you, but there are worse things, right?

I was at a friend's house the other day (she doesn't know anything about fruit trees) and the avocado in her backyard was covered in avocados it started producing in late December. It looks like it is going to go strong through the end of February. They were big and tasty, creamy, although not with a super-high oil content. Is this unusual?

I'm just helping fundraise by driving up the price. :) No way anyone should be able to swoop in and get this beautiful Galaxy for less than $100. Do I hear $115? Come on, I know y'all want to help the forum out...
