What mango varieties have not or only partially bloomed
« on: February 23, 2023, 08:18:48 PM »
It's a parent that many trees have bloomed but do you have any partial or holdouts. I'm totally waiting on sweet tart I have no idea what it's going to do Pickering has one bloom showing signs of something to come just not sure if it will be vegetative growth or bloom. Still waiting on the north side of orange sherbert Southside bloomed mini weeks ago. Westside of bugs and Spice still holding out.Dot has about three blooms have no idea what it will do next. Cotton candy has bloomed on the west side. Malika is a South Side Story. Trees that have completely bloomed weeks ago that I'm very impressed with are Little Gem Karen Michelle M-4 Believe It or Not fruit punch. And one of the first Dwarf Hawaii. Definitely a strange year for my Pickering I've also heard of other folks scratching their head.

My 20yr old Kent's top half has nothing.  South side & lower half including touching ground does.  Not watering it.
3yr or so M4, Pickering, Cogshall has many flowers, peach cobbler, maha, phoenix, raw honey has none.
Trees everywhere else i see as i drive look like 1 huge flower bud!  lol.
I'll be happy if i get to taste Cogs, M4, Pickering.  Will be 1st time.  I only know Kent & love it.

I have a Keitt that is only now starting as well.  I had grafted another variety on it which bloomed on its half of the canopy.
Also, there is a Kesar branch on a tree that has great new flush of leaves but a second branch grafted on a different tree has flowers.

Carrie seedling - mature, none
Carrie - few
Angie - few but much damaged by hurricanes
Maha Chanok - lower undamaged limbs with flowers, above and damaged areas, none
Jean Ellen - full bloom
Pickering - packed with blooms

Dasheri, Gilas, Sey Pasala, Casturi 6-26, and Safeda Lucknow all totally failed to bloom. Not one panicle. Not surprised either.

Update Buxton spice which the west side bloomed many weeks ago finally on the east side did a vegetative growth flush. Cotton candy followed suit with bloom on the west side and vegetative growth on the east. Still waiting on orange sherbert Northside and also Malika's Northside but I do see a trend of vegetative growth. Believe it or not picking has one bloom from many weeks ago it It has buds that are starting to swell. Last season was off year for Pickering. Plenty of fruit but they were Bland. So maybe if I get just one fruit it will be super spectacular 🙂🍭

We had quite the cold snap here around Christmas (like most everywhere); lots of swelling buds on varieties I expected to explode with flowers have flushed with vegetative growth. Cecilove, OS, and Guava have all failed to flower. Pineapple Pleasure is finally flowering (yay!).

I girdled a bunch of branches over the summer, a large percentage of those flowered early and are far ahead in fruit formation. Some girdling had no effect (I'm looking at you Cecilove and Guava), I learned some do/don'ts, still definitely overall worthwhile to do if you have trees/varieties reluctant to flower.

My Orange Sherbet has not flowered since being planted in the ground maybe a little over 5 years now?? Very saddening to say the least.. I’ve not had any good experiences with Orange Sherbet whether it was my tree or not enjoying the fruit and being disappointed with every experience I’ve had trying it. I’ll probably end up top working a seedling in ground in a different location of the yard and see if I have better results 😪

Hatcher, one of the Venus trees, Best, and Taralay zero blooms. (Best was devoured of almost all its leaves by 3 caterpillars before our cold spells to be fair)

Both Lemon Meringues, Edward, Florigon, Marlys, ButterCream, sweet tart all partial blooms with sweet tart being the most prolific and the others listed only having one or two blooms on the whole tree.

How old is your Cecilove?  I thought that variety was a consistent producer?

My OS was planted 3 years ago, has been a fast n steady grower. But no bloom this year, while my other mango trees are doing well. I have a nutritional plan for my OS, for this growing season.

The season before last I had a pretty good crop on orange sherbet but last season the bloom was mostly 80% vegetative growth and ended up only getting a half dozen fruit at best. This season what did bloom much earlier was perfect bloom but at best I may get a dozen or more. From what from what I can tell my PPK which got hit pretty hard by the freeze and I'm sure I didn't help the situation. But it is in a growth recovery mode but still seems to want to bloom. Sweet tart I've cut off all the branches to prepare for top work except one preferred branch. Was giving it the benefit of the doubt but it's doing a vegetative growth and will be removed this weekend. Not too concerned about the fruit because I have a cool cat pickleball acquaintance friend. He claims that he's going to have a banner year for sweet tart. Really not sure what his success can be attributed to. The ocean breeze or the verbal fertilizer that's inducing the bloom😡xxxx xxxx Lol. So there will be tart just not in my backyard. As a side note Malika this season and last has been less than desired
🙂☕️

None of my five dwarf/condo mangoes have bloomed this year except for the 'Ice Cream'.

I reported in an earlier, separate topic on here that this year the 'Ice Cream' had bloomed but not set any fruit but now, about a week later, I have found that it has actually set 4 or 5 small fruits.  Whether they will hold or not this season remains to be seen.

Last year I was away when they were getting ready to ripen and when I returned home a week later all three fruit were gone, either stolen by a passerby or taken by animals, a racoon likely.  Guess the fruits should be bagged this time if I want to have any for myself.

Cheers!

Partial flowering and subsequent fruitlets on m4 (small tree), guava (medium), orange sherbet (medium), and coco cream appear to have dried up, or just dropped. Not sure if any are left.

Glenn, sugarloaf, Cecil love, sweet tart, edward are looking good right now, although ST and ed are small trees with only a few fruits each.

We are seeing some small but significant drought stress-induced bloom right now on some varieties which is great to see. Did a little video about it today with Paul Nison and showed some of them but not all. Should mean a redux for a few types later in the season. A couple like Kook Lom Krong and Saigon could see most of their crops coming from drought stress bloom which is pretty cool.

To answer your question, my mango cultivars are in 5- or 7-galllon pots and not yet in the ground.

They are:
    ~ Beverly
    ~ Fairchild
    ~ Ice Cream
~ Irwin's  (aka Egg of the Sun)
~ Pickering  (this one is the newest acquisition and is in a 1 gal pot.)
All are dwarf or semi-dwarf 'Condo' mangoes.  Beverly and Ice Cream flowered for me last year but only the Ice Cream has bloomed this year (2023).  Only the Ice Cream has set any fruit for me both years.

OK — HTH

That's great you're getting some production out of a pot!  I tried that approach several years ago..albeit unsuccessfully haha!  But I'm happy to hear it's working for you until they're in the ground!  I'm sure once all your trees are in the ground, you'll be happy with the output!  Good luck!

I decided on dwarf and semi-dwarf cultivars for my mango trees so that they could kept in large pots and yet be dragged inside if it were to get too cold for them in Dec/Jan/Feb here in Tampa.  I expect to keep them pruned back to about 8 ft tall so they can be dragged around if needs be or otherwise be kept small enough that they could be covered to protect them.

My choices of stuff for my Fruit Forest have been for things that hopefully can survive a light freeze that we get here some years.  So far, so good.  I've only lost about six things to the cold over the last three years.  But then my Fruit Forest is after all an experiment to see what will grow and survive long-term in my yard here in Tampa.

My best successes so far have been citrus varieties, bananas, and passionfruit.  But as the smaller seedlings of different things get bigger I'm expecting to start seeing fruit on those, too.

Cheers!

I have a Glenn in a pot that eventually and now permanently live in a 40 plus gallon nursery pot that produced fruits every year...here's a few pictures of fruits many years ago. About 5 years ago I placed it underneath two inground mango trees near my Oak trees and it has permanently rooted itself to the ground now so it is very dwarf for being in the pot for almost 16 years! I will leave it there till it dies Lol...can't move it even if I wanted to at this point. It gives me 5-10 fruits every years except when we have a killing freeze  :(

Lakeland, FL area and it has started as a mixed season here.  Cogshall bloomed on east and north sides with a decent amount of fruit forming.  Going south, Carrie is next and that has a more complete bloom but much less fruit.  Than the Mallika with no bloom at all.  Next is the Glenn with some blooms and fruit.  The next one is Choc Anon with nothing, followed by Cotton Candy with nothing, then a Keitt with some blooms all around with a little fruit and finally in that row there is an Ice Cream that was loaded with blooms but very little fruit.

Other side of yard has no blooms at all.

The grafts are ~2 yrs old; lots of growth, I'm expecting next year to be the year. Guava is ~3 yrs old, it might get the saw if I don't see anything soon. New growth on Guava is such a pretty burgundy-color and I like the leaf shape, but it has very lanky internode spacing.

I walked the grove yesterday and these are the laggards for me-

baileys marvel
Golden nugget
Malllika
Cogshall
Keo Savoy
Guava
Choc anon
Cac

Some like cac decided to push new growth and never bloomed.   Looks like a light yr for Kesar as well.
The rest will hopefully make up for these.
