Anyone grown/fruited P. Alata in south Fl
« on: March 09, 2013, 11:29:42 PM »
I have been thinking about growing passiflora alata. Anyone had any experience with the species in our region. Also hows the quality of fruit compared to other passion fruits?

Got to taste the P. alata in southern Brazil, where they are commercially grown. It is a nice very large passionfruit, not tart like some of the P. edulis, very large and beautiful flowers also. Definitely worth growing. Berto is growing them in Florida, so i'm sure he can help you more.

If they do well in California they will do well in Fl.
I grow them also , but I am not so thrilled with the taste , has a hint of papaya , not like the small Hawaiian which I like .
Just got seeds of an ' improved ' alata , we'll see in a couple of years .

Berto grows P. alata. I tasted the fruit a few years ago when I was at his house to pick up a cambuca tree. It tasted pretty good.

I have heard good things, but I am concerned about the description of papaya, as I find papaya to be off-putting, for the most part.

I got seeds from Berto here in Ft. Myers and planted them. Fruits in one year from seed. Unbothered by this years (not so) cold. Great fruit. Tastes like passionflower mixed with fresh squeezed orange juice to me. No papaya taste to me. Fruits in spring before mangoes and lychees.

Great fruit! I really like them nice and cold, as a dessert fruit! More then one vine, and hand cross pollination equal tons of heavy sweet  fruits.
