Wild passion vine with red berries?
« on: July 24, 2024, 09:43:48 AM »
Found these yesterday while kayaking. Could not reach berries from kayak. Is it passion vine? They are small and look amazingly like cherries. Are they edible ?

It looks like Corky Stem Passion Fruit (Passaiflora Suberosa). I believe the fruits are poisonous to humans but I know butterflies love this plant. The Fruits do go though color changes until ripe, the ripe color being blackish.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passiflora_suberosa

I was thinking Passiflora foetida, stinking passionflower. They are supposedly edible but never tried one.

I agree with P.foetida because of those hairy bracts and red fruit. Could be wrong, am not an expert on this subject.

Cool find! Yes, p. foetida. The fruits are actually tasty, but not much to them. Milder and more floral than typical pf, no tart and not really musky.

They are best when very very red.
